Re: Walt Jocketty out as Cards GM
I don't think we'll be able to see how this turns out until opening day 2008. There are several issues here that led to this day. During Jocketty's tenure, team payroll was steadily increased by ownership to afford the one or two name players that they'd bring in each year. The past few years, however, ownership felt that a payroll near $100 mil was sufficient to stay competitive. Problem is, with the majority of payroll tied up in a select few players, Jocketty was left dumpster diving near the end. To make matters worse, Jocketty had to not only stay under his set payroll, but was also forced to cater to La Russa's preference for players who did not require much teaching. This led to the plethora of dfa'd players that were picked up in the past two years. So while blame can be put on Jocketty for a number of poor contracts and poor drafts, there is plenty of blame to spread around for what has happened to the Cards in the past two years (WS or not, they won 83 games). The formula for success employed under Jocketty/La Russa could only work so long.
The next step, of course, is to see what La Russa decides to do. Ownership wants him back, but this will certainly influence his decision (whether positively or negatively). Once Tony makes his decision, I think we'll be able to see which direction this club will be headed.Comment

Is the rumor still going around that they will both end up in Cincy?"The academic support at Ohio State, there is no way you can fail. Even if you're giving minimal effort there is no way you can fail."

According to this... Tony is preparing for his 13th season with the red birds.
Tony's back ... almost. Cardinals manager Tony La Russa confirmed Friday that he is prepared to return for a 13th season in his current post, barring unforeseen complications in his ongoing talks with team chairman Bill DeWitt Jr.University of Oregon
