    Salary cap in baseball?

As Pirates fan I would be all for this. Even more than that as a baseball fan I would love to see baseball get back to being on par with football as the national pastime. Unfortunately under baseballs current economic system this is nearly impossible due to the fact that most teams are never in the running for the world series on the first day of spring training. I realize that with the current strength of the players union this could never happen. If it could, would anyone else be in favor of a cap? Why or why not?

Baseball will never return to the top spot as the American pastime. Even with a salary cap, most people would still fall asleep by the 5th inning. It will never surpass football.

A cap would be a great idea. Unfortunately, not only would the players union object, but there are too many teams out there that simply couldn't fit under the cap with their current rosters, that teams would almost have to redraft like a fantasy league for it to work.

BTW: Nice to see another person admit to being a Pirates fan. At least we can suffer in groups

It will never happen...and its not because of the players union. The NFL takes a large portion of TV and ticket sales money and puts it into one big pot and divides it evenly throughout the NFL. Thus every team gets the same amount of money and thus the equal salary cap. But in baseball, Steinbrenner owns all the TV market in New York and no way he wants to share his money with the other teams...therefor its more like the business world, everyone for themselves. The NFL is the best sport going because of their economic system, its so competitive and every team has a shot each year if they have good management. Baseball will never get to this level as long as they are under their economic system, however, I think the new deal is somewhat a step in the right direction...but you just can't compete when you can only afford a $30 million payroll, while 15 other teams are spending over $80 million.
The problem also with the new system, MLB didn't put a floor cap on the payroll (a minimum payroll), so the revenue sharing increased, but Tampa Bay cut payroll. Ridiculous. I would have been very happy with this system if they had put a $40 million minimum payroll on the deal. Oh well. That's baseball.

I agree that baseball will never again overtake football as the national pastime. Although i really think that with a salary cap the game would be rejuvenated and its fanbase would get younger which is absolutely vital. One of the main reasons football has become so popular is the fact that every team is competetive and has a very real shot to win. Barring the Bengals and Cardinals of course.lol. But seriously, at least the Bengals and Cards have a chance to turn it around quickly if they want to, unlike my lowly Pittsburgh Pirates.

A salary cap would be a good idea. Would some of the low payroll teams open up their checkbooks to sign some of the people some of these other teams would have to get rid of to get under the cap? Sadly, I think some online OOTP leagues have better revenue systems than MLB.

The only way a cap system would work is if revenue sharing was almost equal throughout the league, and I just don't see this happening, especially for the next 3-5 years, however long the new labor deal is.

nikeford, I totally agree with you. Plus, the baseball players union is TOO strong whereas the NFLPA is very weak. That is why the NFL can make rules that help the LEAGUE.
