Re: The Boss giving up control of the Yanks
Yep I read that just a while ago. if this was a few years ago i'd be jumping for joy but not really right now. Cashman seemed to have seen the writing on the wall and actually started building up the Yankee farm system. Yes there's going to be a major adjustment period but the Yankees will actually spend reasonably and not blow everyone out of the water with contract offers.
I wonder if monkey see monkey do will apply here and the Red Sox stop with some of those outrageous contract offers as well? Nonetheless I bet the Yanks will have a payroll around 80-100 mil rather then 200 million. LOL
Personally i'll miss not having Steinbrenner there because love him or hate him he made baseball in NY larger then life itself. He's also the last of the outspoken, outrageous type owners that MLB has seen. I don't think we'll ever see ownership like that in pro sports again. Cuban is fun but he doesn't have the idiosyncrasies of a Steinbrenner, O'Finley and Turner.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Re: The Boss giving up control of the Yanks
I don't think so, the Yankees will always probably spend a ton of money. They are going to have to spend a lot this offseason to keep A-Rod, Rivera and Posada. They'll get a lot of relief next offseason when Giambi and Pavano finally come off the books, but at the same time if a guy like Santana reaches the market they'll go after him hard. Texiera is also a possibility.
Yankees are smarter with Cashman in charge, but if there's a big time free agent available that makes sense I doubt they'll ever really pass on them.Originally posted by Jay BilasThe question isn't whether UConn belongs with the elites, but over the last 20 years, whether the rest of the college basketball elite belongs with UConnComment

Re: The Boss giving up control of the Yanks
Sad day, IMO. I'm no Yankee fan, nor am I a Steinbrenner fan, but I won't appreciate the Yankees as much without him. He's just a face that I know too well in baseball to let go, and he's not even on the field.Samsung PN60F8500 PDP / Anthem MRX 720 / Klipsch RC-62 II / Klipsch RF-82 II (x2) / Insignia NS-B2111 (x2) / SVS PC13-Ultra / SVS SB-2000 / Sony MDR-7506 Professional / Audio-Technica ATH-R70x / Sony PS3 & PS4 / DirecTV HR44-500 / DarbeeVision DVP-5000 / Panamax M5400-PM / Elgato HD60Comment

I understand that, but I mean holding on until health forces him out. I'd like to see him groom a replacement and maybe take a lesser advisory role with the team.

Re: The Boss giving up control of the Yanks
I hope the two sons take a more hands off approach and let Cashman do a majority of the transaction and front office work.
Sad to see George is finally gone. It already hasn't been the last the last few years without him in the public eye, but now that there's some closure it hits you a little harder. The greatest owner the sport has ever seen, even if he was a complete ******* at times. The one thing you can never take away from him is that he always put the fans' interest first.

Re: The Boss giving up control of the Yanks
I was listening to the pregame tonight and Jayson Stark said that George still has overall control of the team meaning, he still has say over managers and management. It's his sons that are taking over the day to day stuff.
So it's not like Steinbrenner is totally going away. Still I doubt we'll hear from him as much as we did in the past.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Re: The Boss giving up control of the Yanks
5. OK, you've probably heard too much already about those infamous sacrifice flies of Cleveland, the mighty midges that, unlike almost all AL hitters, knocked Yankees phenom Joba Chamberlain off his game. But this is too good not to pass on: When the bugs started swarming Chamberlain, a local insect expert in Cleveland telephoned the Indians with an urgent message -- those bugs are called midges, and whatever you do, do NOT use insect repellent; midges are attracted to the stuff. The Yankees practically bathed in bug spray; the more Chamberlain put on, the more the bugs swarmed him. So there you go. The Yankees can spend $190 million on payroll and still leave a blatant weakness: no, not their middle relief -- their lack of an entymology expert."It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

Re: The Boss giving up control of the Yanks
Unbelievable.
As for the thread, I doubt this is anything really new, it was just announced. Too many signs that George has been in bad shape for awhile and hasn't been able to run the Yankees.Originally posted by Jay BilasThe question isn't whether UConn belongs with the elites, but over the last 20 years, whether the rest of the college basketball elite belongs with UConnComment
