That was a good read, but I really don't like the implication that Griffey is some kind of jerk & doesn't appreciate fans. That's pretty crappy. Anyone who's ever at that level of superstar status is going to face a lot of situations where people want their time & they just don't want to give it. Anyone would get tired of it. Anyone would skip out on it from time to time. It doesn't mean you're a jerk. I don't like when people try to paint pictures like that just because someone doesn't sign autographs once in awhile.

Seattle's best kept secret was that Junior's a pain in the rear...Cincy just exposed him. He's got talent, and I don't think anyone would ever doubt that. I would love to see him healthy, 'cause I'd like to see how he stacks up against Bonds in the same league, against mostly the same teams.

I did nothing of the sort. I merely recalled the circumstances as they happened. My point was not to paint Griffey as "some kind of jerk", but rather to illustrate that the players in person are often quite different than they're portrayed on television.
Sometimes that's for the better, and sometimes it's for the worse.

However, Griffey of the last few years hasn't quite been the star that MLB hitches itself to anymore, either - and it's not just because of his injuries.
Let's not forget that he tied the Mariners' hands by demanding to be traded, but only to the Reds. Since then, he's been doing little but pout since he's arrived. The Reds tried to ship him out this winter, taking advantage of a loophole in his contract - he didn't submit his list of teams that he could be traded to (because of his limited no-trade clause in his contract), and since he didn't submit that list on time, the Reds had an opportunity to deal him anywhere they wished - and they tried.
Essentially, they tried to trade him behind his back.
Think most teams would do that to their best player and marquee draw if there wasn't something else going on?

that's exactly right. He creates many clubhouse problems. So does Bonds, but I think (IMO) Griffey's seem to detract from his team more...not sure why.

It may not have been your intent, but when you write something like that, obviously people will take it as you calling him a jerk.

Anyway, I have to defend him because he's always been my favorite player. I also have to admit I think he seems a little whiny, but damn that! He's still Griffey and I still like him.

I like the rest of the write-up, though. Feels like baseball & that's always a good thing.

Coming from Mariners country it's nice to see Griffey finally being exposed for what he is- a selfish person. I think he is a great player but his attitude towards the fans always seemed to turn me off. He never seemed to take the time with fans the way Edgar, Arod and Dan Wilson did. Hopefully some day he will realize that there is more to baseball than his individual accomplishments.
The game is bigger than him.
