Indians starter Paul Byrd outed for HGH use between 2002-2005

On the morning of Game 7, very nice timing. If he gets into the game tonight, hopefully he is showered with some friendly Fenway chants.

Cleveland pitcher spent thousands on human growth hormone

Lance Williams,Mark Fainaru-Wada, Chronicle Staff Writers

Paul Byrd, the veteran pitcher who has helped the Cleveland Indians reach the brink of the World Series, bought nearly $25,000 worth of human growth hormone and syringes from a Florida anti-aging clinic that was targeted by law enforcement for illegally distributing performance-enhancing drugs, business records show.

Byrd made 13 purchases from the Palm Beach Rejuvenation Center between August 2002 and January 2005, according to the records. During those years, he pitched for the Kansas City Royals, the Atlanta Braves and the Los Angeles Angels.

Paying with a credit card, Byrd spent $24,850 to buy more than 1,000 vials of growth hormone, an injectable prescription drug with muscle-building properties, and hundreds of syringes.

The records reviewed by The Chronicle included Byrd's purchase and shipping orders, payment data and other information, including his birth date and Social Security number. The records were provided by a confidential news source, who said the orders were consistent with an athlete's personal use of growth hormone.

Byrd's agent, Bo McKinnis, did not respond to phone calls and e-mails from The Chronicle on Friday requesting comment for this story. An Indians spokesman said Friday that he had relayed The Chronicle's queries to both Byrd and his agent. On Saturday, the spokesman said Byrd would have no comment. The team made no comment.

Haha, he obviously got ripped off then. Boy couldn't throw heat if you gave him gasoline and a torch while on the mound.

HGH and roids are not to throw faster... They are to allow your body to heal faster and allow you to throw more pitches....

Not surprising. He was a fringe major leaguer who bounced around a lot up to that point in his career. Interestingly enough, 2002, 2004 and 2005 were the best years of his career, ERA wise.

we are going to need a separate thread in a few weeks for all the names that come out

Anybody else think Byrd looks like Floyd Landis?

Neifi Perez and Alex Sanchez asks where the hell did Paul Byrd get hit roids from?

once again... like I said in a previous thread... if they weren't illegal when they were done... What is the point of bringing it up other than to ruin careers and the sport of Baseball which is at its most popular right now. You might think its because he's an Indian but check the other thread on George Mitchell... I don't care who it is... why not actually make the testing stronger now, and not ruin people for their past.

In fact, here's my comment from that thread...

I hate that baseball is going to be hurt by this.

I don't think it ruins anybody's career. It just makes them look like *******s which hopefully (although not likely) discourages people from doing it in the future. Don't want to be outed as a drug user, don't do them. It's that simple.

Also, I'm guessing Paul Byrd didn't obtain the HGH in a legal manner so does it really matter if its technically legal in baseball, or not?

Also, I'm glad if it makes Baseball look bad. I'm sick of this sweep it under the rug mentality they've been taking. It's naive to think that performance enhancers, especially HGH isn't still a big problem in MLB. Hell, there's a good chance Paul Byrd is still using HGH but just got smarter about how he obtains it after it became a bigger issue.

Unfortunately hurting the game is the only thing that's going to force them to do anything about it.

It's now being reported that Byrd took the HGH in prescribed doses due to a tumor at the base of his pituitary gland, and that the Indians and everyone else knew. Awesome background fact-checking by the media.

Not really related to the topic, but I just went to Byrd's Wiki and saw that he was once addicted to pornography. Weird.
