Teams get advance notice of "random" drug tests.

    Nice...

    http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3087575

"As soon as you know you are going to be tested, you rip off the patch and take a shower and urinate, and in an hour or two you will get numbers down real fast," said Catlin, according to The Times.

Guys are still being caught so I don't really see the issue.

And I'd guess that if MLB found out that a team warned it's players of a drug test then that team would face serious consequences for their actions.
"It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

"You'll not find more penny-wise/pound-foolish behavior than in Major League Baseball." - Rob Neyer

Hasn't this been known for awhile now, or am I thinking of another league?

It sounds like you're confusing MLB with the NFL. Serious consequences? As long as they're not gambling on the test results I wouldn't expect much.

Two problems. Teams could easier protect the bigger name players. Also this just doesn't help the perception of the entire process. It isn't truly a surprise test is somebody knows about it. It's just not a good idea.

While MLB's testing process is better than it once was (which was nothing), it's still not very strong. Using a urine test will never be very accurate. Of course the alternative, a blood test, will cause many problems with the players association.

This really doesn't come as a surprise, but is yet another black eye on MLB and the steroid allegations/problems surrounding the league.

Hows about they just say F it and allow steroids. F the interity of the game and F all those baseball historians who's panties gets twisted whenever a record is about to be broken. I want to see 100+ HR seasons and scores that resemble football.

They won't be able to protect them when that big list comes out. That's why I don't see the issue. The FBI will always find a way to track those that break the law. It's the way of government.

I never took MLB seriously when it came to them controlling steroids. Players still get caught is my point because even though there's drug testing and players know they will be tested they still take steroids. So, obviously they don't fear the MLB and I don't see why they should.

Has anyone here ever really believed a word that has come out of the mouth of Bud Selig? The guy is a used car salesman in every aspect of the profession. He's done great things for the league (don't get me wrong) but I never took anything he says as 100% accurate.

If you have to talk up your drug testing system then it's because it's not that very good to begin with and that's never been a surprise. Not even the NFL has an infallible drug testing system.
