Re: Andy Petite declines Yanks $16M option
...because he'll get a decent contract from another team that might value a very good left-handed starter AND he probably realizes the Yanks are going to be in rough shape in 2008. How many years does he really have left? Why waste them with a team in micro-rebuild.Comment

Re: Andy Petite declines Yanks $16M option
I doubt it. Everything that has been said has made it sound like he'll take a lot of time to make the decision whether to come back or not. If he had a deadline to accept the option than this isn't really a surprise.Originally posted by Jay BilasThe question isn't whether UConn belongs with the elites, but over the last 20 years, whether the rest of the college basketball elite belongs with UConnComment

Re: Andy Petite declines Yanks $16M option
It's probably part of it but considering Pettitte's history it has more to do with his health and family than anything.
Pettitte has never been a guy that wanted to play into his 40's. He's going to be 36 and I think he's content with his career.
I wouldn't be surprised if he decides to retire."It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

Unlike A-Rod's bitch ***, I wouldn't be surprised if Pettitte was honestly waiting to see what Jorge and Mo do before he makes his decision."You make your name in the regular season, and your fame in the postseason." - Clyde Frazier

Re: Andy Petite declines Yanks $16M option
Even then that doesn't automatically means he's back with the Yanks if they stay as I also believe that he's happy with his career. Pettitte doesn't seem to have the body type or stamina to pitch into his 40s and let's face it, the guy's had a darn good career already. Why waste it on a team that's slowly but surely in a transition phase?Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Re: Andy Petite declines Yanks $16M option
I think that has a lot to do with it as well. Pettitte, Mo, Jorge and Jeter are probably a clique in the locker room unto themselves as they are really the last vestiges of those great Yankee teams of a decade ago. So I honestly believe that he'll make his decision based on what those guys do.

Great thing about him is his determination to complete a season when he's committed to it. So, I can't hate him for wanting to think about it. He knows if he comes back he wouldn't accept anything less than being in the shape necessary to be successful."It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. Re: Andy Petite declines Yanks $16M option
Are the Yankees willing to re-sign him because he turned down an option? With A-Rod they were all huffy with the "Option or we'll never negotiate with him", didn't know if that was across the board with all players or not.Nintendo Switch Friend Code: SW-7009-7102-8818Comment

Re: Andy Petite declines Yanks $16M option
Pettitte didnt decline because he wants to test FA. He doesnt know whether he wants to retire or not. The Yanks have said he's got a $16 milliion offer on the table for him for as long as it takes for him to decide. The option was really just a formality.
