This is the first year in a long time that I wont be picking up a baseball

    when on release day.....

you would think with so much competition that there would one all around killer baseball title coming out.

I still play NHL2k3 and plan getting the best sports game of the year that comes out in March. and guess what?

    it's not baseball....

    it's soccer...

yeah I know what your thinking...

    but it's true..

    screw the baseball video games....

get this instead if you want an awesome sports game.

ps. who knows.. maybe Inside Pitch will impress me with online play. btw.. I'm a huge baseball fan... I'm just tired of year after year.... NO great all around baseball coming out with all these different titles... yeah.. their might be some good ones like WSB, ASB, and HH.... but are any of these going to get a 9.0 or higher reviews? probably not.. whatever happen to the gold of days of great baseball games..... Baseball Stars anyone? RBI..... Bases Loaded..... geez

rbi and bases loaded ? those games suck by todays standards. every game this year blows those away.

                well of course....

but I dunno.. still games today still don't provideo that awesome pure fun gameplay in baseball imo.

I will be suprised if there is any baseball game that comes out this year that is GREAT... meaning up for SPorts game of the year like an NHL2k3 or something.... that's what I'm talking about.... when was the last GREAT baseball game??????

ummmmm imo.. probably WSB 98...... how many years ago was that???? lol

maybe I am expecting to much.... but I really don't think I am.

Re: This is the first year in a long time that I wont be picking up a baseball

We all expect a lot out of our games nowadays, and that is a big part of the problem. We are so spoiled when it comes to technology that a lot of people have been reduced to bitching about shoe colors or home runs bouncing off stadium facades. Sure, they are nice bonuses to have, but does anyone remember just how bad some of the games from yesteryear truly were?

Most baseball games back then couldn't even get the basic, fundamental aspects right, yet we still ate it up. To this day, 9 out of 10 baseball game die hards will say that Baseball Stars or even RBI is their favorite game of all time. Why is this? Take a look at the other baseball games they were competing against at the time. It was games such as Baseball, Major League Baseball by LJN, Dusty Diamond's All Star Softball, and so on and so forth. You can even make a case for Atari or Intellivision games being comparable.

Those games were all pretty much crap, even back then. I know that is why I have such fond memories of games like Baseball Stars. It was simply light years ahead of everything else I had played, and could be considered a revolutionary game in terms of video baseball.

Go back and play it now, or RBI, Bases Loaded, Little League Championship Series, even Ken Griffey on SNES. It will be great..........for about 10 minutes. That is about as long as it takes for the nostalgia to wear off and make you realize just how good today's baseball games really are in comparison. It is just a lot harder to see it now as opposed to then because there is no one game that is head and shoulders above the others anymore.

Re: This is the first year in a long time that I wont be picking up a baseball

Hear hear, SportsorDeath!! It was easier to pay more attention to the "game" aspect of things in the old days, since all you could put on the screen were 2d graphics. Now with the newer systems, people expect so much more out of their games: cool 3d graphics, tons of animations, accurate commentary... the list goes on and on.

The question is, what will the average consumer buy? The answer is usually the best looking game. The people who frequent this forum will probably say they want gameplay over graphics, but they would be the minority.

In the last few years, baseball games haven't really improved. They made the jump to 3d, but after that they just kind of went stagnant. Year after year would just be new roster changes, with little or no gameplay revisions. I played MLB 98 when it came out, and was excited for MLB 99, hoping that they would at least put in support for the dual-shock controller. Alas, they couldn't even do that, and this was a Sony product.

Baseball games have pretty much been ignored. The reasoning is that if they can come up with a decent baseball engine, then they don't have to put that many people on it for the next year. They can bring in a lot of money without having to spend too much to sell their product. This is what happened to the Triple Play franshise. The last 2 years it was farmed out to other companies who didn't know the code base. And, they've kept their same player models for the longest time, and haven't really upgraded their graphics engine. They were banking on the brand name. And you know what?... it worked. Even though the game didn't play very well last year, it still sold a lot. They knew they were'nt going to be able to keep it up, so that's why they brought it in-house... to give it a whole new look, and I think they did a really good job of it in the 1.5 year that they've been working on it.

Whether you like it or not, WSB raised the bar for the baseball games when it came out late in last year's season. Much improved graphics, better gameplay from the year before, etc. The public noticed, and the other game companies noticed.

Each company is competing as best they can. EA re-vamped their whole product, and I think they have made some good steps on trying to put something new into the game. 3DO figured out that they might not be able to compete on their antiquated graphics, so they made an effort on that front. Acclaim has added TONNNNNS of new game modes, stadiums, and other bells and whistles to help add to the baseball experience. And I know that the people working on WSB have been trying to fix the problems with their game, as well as add more features. With all this competition now, this should be the best year for baseball gamers in a long time.

None of these games are going to be perfect, but each are making an effort in their own way. It's not cheap to make games nowadays. People expect so much more than a batter who is about 15 pixels tall. The more "realism" and features people want, the harder it is for game companies to try to satisfy everyone.

If you think that some game from 5 or 6 years ago is the greatest thing ever, that is your perogotive, but then you're not even giving this year's games a chance.
