Potentially Bad News for Sports Videogaming (the end of WSB?)

At Yahoo Finance, you get free stock quotes, up-to-date news, portfolio management resources, international market data, social interaction and mortgage rates that help you manage your financial life.

If either of these two scenarios (Microsoft buys Sega or EA buys Sega) play out, it'll be terrible for anyone who loves sports videogames. If EA buys Sega for example, you know the first thing they'll do is shut down Sega's sports division, thereby taking out one of their largest competitors in sports gaming in one fell swoop (hasta la vista World Series Baseball, NBA 2K3, et al.) If Microsoft buys Sega, the results are a little unclear: would Microsoft shut down their own internal sports division and give way to Sega's or would it be the other way around? Either way, someone's sports game franchise would cease to exist. I think we'll all agree that more competition amongst the videogame companies is best for the consumer. If a deal for Sega goes through, they'll be less of it and gamers get shafted. Thoughts anyone?

I think it'll be horrible...every game has something different, a "hook" that the manufacturer has focused on...sim, features, gameplay, graphics, whatever. I really think that this couldn't happen at a worse time when baseball for consoles is FINALLY getting good. You know EA won't scrap MVP when they've just started it, and they'll probably shut down sega sports. I like madden, but it's started to get old, so I was thinking NFL 2k4 next year...it sucks that I may not have that choice. If I was Microsoft, I'd shut down MICROSOFT SPORTS, and just add the cool online features and stuff to the sega titles. Sega sports has a faithful following, I'd hope they'd both keep it around. But it's not likely. And, no, I'm not a fanboy, I don't own a single sega game.

Just because MS and EA are "bigger" doesn't mean they're masters of the devil

More than likely if EA or MS bought the Sega franchise a big part of the reason would be FOR the sports division and they would then try and integrate the best of both into their respective franchises. My guess is you'd see things like the ESPN license in Madden, and NBA Live, etc.

I'm not saying that it's better for us to have no competition going on, but I do think it's highly unlikely they'll just "shut down" the other operation.

Why in America companies and people are celebrated for "making it" and then when they reach some magic line of "scary" everyone turns on them I'll never know. Same thing with athletes, we love making them into hero's, but not as much as we like tearing them down later.

It's not that EA's scary...it's just that a large part of their games have GOTTEN WORSE. Triple play, NBA live, their hockey series...the only exception has been Madden. And quite honestly, after 10 years on various systems, I may be ready for somethin' non-madden...the ps2 gameplay's been virtually the same in the last three incarnations...I don't see a whole lot of improvement coming out of EA. That's my only point. It's not a personal vendetta.

If EA bought them, they may not even mess with the process. They'll probably share some resources and then EA would theoretically have two games of each genre on the market. i.e., EA fans would still buy Madden, Sega fans would buy 2k3, others would buy which one they felt played better, and some others would buy both.

See I think if Microsoft buys them then the 2k series can still live on. Sega Sports could become the Xbox's equivalent to the PS2's EA sports only diff is they will be Xbox only perhaps. Then on Xbox you would have 2 major sports developers. 2k developers and Microsoft Studios. I think Microsoft will be more flexible and allow this to happen, whereas if EA gets hold of them, GAME OVER!!

I agree with LBZrule, if MS gets buys Sega they could continue to take Fever and Inside Drive the over the top route, and send 2k in the dirrection they've been going towards being the ultimate sim. If either of them kill off the 2k games, I'm going to be pissed at who ever it is.
