    Frustrations abound

After picking up the new ASB yesterday, I was pleased to see that the game is improved over last year.

At the same time, however, I am having tremendous difficulty with pitch speeds, even on exaggerated mode. They are just too damn fast, and I'm unable to mount any type of consistent offense.

My high for runs scored is 4, and I've lost all 7 games I've played. Is anybody else having difficulty with pitching speeds or making contact?

In addition, last year the cursor was sluggish. This year, however, it moves so gast that you cannot really place the cursor where you want it. You just hope contact works out.

I understand others may not have this problem, but I feel hitting should be based on recognizing pitches and actual skill. I DO NOT consider lightning quick reflexes to be considered skill.

As improved as this year's game is - and it is very improved - I think it may be a return. I'm still giving it time, but it seems the more I play the worse I get at hitting.

Why not try playing without the cursor? That's what I plan on doing, at least at first.

Yea, I turned the cursor off as soon as I saw the pitch speeds. I know their tryna simulate real life, but Damn!

Yes, it is quite the skill. How long do you think baseball players have to recognize a pitch, see where its going to end up, decide whether or not to swing, swing at the correct time and location and, hopefully, make contact?

To give you an idea, go here and take a look. Or if you wanna be lazy, it take less than a 1/4 of a second to do all that on a 90MPH fastball.

I'm not saying that it's not hard to hit in the game, but to say that lightning quick reflexes is not a skill, well, you're insulting all ballplayers abound.

Of course hitting in real life takes skill.

But in a videogame, we ARE NOT professionals, and should at least have the option of playing a game where we can use our other, non athletic skills to play.

I am going to try easy batting. My concern last year is that easy batting yielded results that were way too beneficial to the user. But pitch speeds in this game are unreal.

As I mentioned earlier at one point, I faced Percival and literally couldn't even see his fast ball. That's not skill, that's making a hitting model difficult on cheese alone.

Makes me wonder, if pitches were slower, would results of games be even remotley realistic. Possibly not.

I had ASB last year and got pretty good at cursor batting. I got the game yesterday and this is the first time I've played a game of ASB since WSB came out last year.

My first game, Braves vs Mets, I lost to the Mets 2-0 in a pitchers duel between Glavine and Maddux. I didn't fare too well with the ol' cursor again---only got 4 hits and struck out 12 times.

Next game I played, I controlled the Astros vs. the Phillies. After about 2 innings and still not much success with the cursor batting, I switched to zone based for the hell of it. The next swing, I cracked a homer to deep centerfield (in Minute Maid Park no less) off the bat of, ummmm, Roy Oswalt.

Needless to say, I'm gonna stick with cursor batting.

Dales, I'm not sure if you are baiting me into a game of semantics for the fun of it or whatnot, but let me make this clear:

For a professional athlete, reflexes is a skill needed.

For a video game's hitting model's difficulties to lie, almost 100%, on that same reflex is cheese.

HH, WSB (last year), and Home Run King all had decent hitting models, with a cursor, that yielded good results. I'm sorry, but when a Jamie Moyer 85mph fastball looks that fast, it isn't right.

The fact is, ASB may hide problems in its hitting model by making it so that, for the most part, there are a great majority of the pitches you can't catch up to. I repeat - Percival threw fastballs I couldn't even see. You're telling me that is a definition of "fun" in a videogame.

Where I come from, I call that cheap.
