    This guy wants the Rock

This guys argument is nothing but weak and whiny...

    quote
Raines is the only first-time player on the Hall of Fame ballot this year who deserves enshrinement. He is not likely to be elected this year, however. It may take several ballots for enough baseball writers to appreciate a guy who played his first 12 seasons in Canada for a team that never won a playoff series, a guy who never received a single first-place vote in MVP balloting, who started just two All-Star Games and made none of them after turning 27, who never managed to get 200 hits in a season, and who wound up with fewer career hits (2,605) than Dawson and Al Oliver, another former Montreal teammate.
    unquote

But, when Verducci lays out the numbers at the end of the article, one cannot help but be impressed.

One thing is certain...what this article shows us is that Wade Boggs kicked ***.

"Because Tim Raines never has a bad day," Jeter would say. "Every single day, whether it's a day game after a night game, whether he's playing or not, whether he's hitting or not, Rock always has a smile on his face."

Bias aside (and I am biased, Rock was my favourite player as a kid), Raines should be in the Hall eventually.

I agree Raines should be a HOF'er IMO.

Raines is probably the most deserving player in this entire class for the HOF.

Always have been a big Rock Raines fan. As a little kid for whatever reason I thought Rock and Tim Raines were brothers. Did he ever get to share the same outfield with his son in Baltimore? I agree with the article and he should be put in but will take a while.

2001 Orioles they were teammates. If you go to http://www.baseball-reference.com/oracle/ you can find a link from any player to any player by means of teammates (just like playing 6 degrees of Kevin Bacon.)

edit: I didn't see that you knew they were teammates, I don't know if they actually played at the same time, but only assumed they did at least once.

That article is a bit dumb, though.

I mean, I'm all for Tim Raines getting into the HOF. I agree he won't get in now, which is a shame. It'll take some time.

But, why would you mention his inability to make all-star teams or get 200 hits in a season or get a single MVP vote and then say, "That's why he deserves to be in the Hall!"

                That's a bit backwards, no?
"It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

I'll never forget. The first Yankee game I ever went to in 1996, the Yanks were facing the BoSox, and Tim Raines hit 2 homers that game for a comeback victory (Paul O'Neal and Cecil Fielder had one apiece). 11 years and 40 or so Yankee games I've gone to later, I still remember those homers by #31.

I hope he gets into HOF asap.

I've always seen Raines as a borderline HOF'er. I can see the arguments for and against him. I think he should probably get in, but won't see it as a travesty if he doesn't.

I think he should be in the Hall, but I do understand the arguments against him getting in. Maybe I am bias because I have always like Raines, but in my opinion he should be in the hall of fame.
