The Royals of the late 70s to mid 80s: The Teams That Time Forgot

More than a few times Ive seen that they had some good and sometimes heated games with the Yankees of the late 70s. They made it to the Series in 1980 and won in 1985 and were in the playoffs in 1984 as well. This team had a group of mainstays that included George Brett, Willie Wilson, and Frank White. They always had good pitching, too.

Does anyone remember more about this franchise in the years Ive specified?

I was up and following baseball in the 80's, so those mid 80 Royal teams I recall.. Saberhagen, Gubiza, & the immortal Quizenberry made a nice pitching staff...

I think before those guys came along they had Dennis Leonard, Larry Gura, and Splittorf.

The Royals had a good run from 1975-85 making the playoffs 6 times. appearing in 2 World Series and winning it all in 1985. Unfortunately it has been pretty much downhill from there. The Royals have finished less than 10 games back in their division only four times in the last 22 years and the closest they have been to the post season was finishing 2 games back in 1987.

Some really great players passed thru those 70's and 80's teams but my favorite has to be George Brett, who i was lucky to get to see play in person a few years before he retired.

Re: The Royals of the late 70s to mid 80s: The Teams That Time Forgot

They were an incredibly good team during that era but before I give props to some of those guys I have to yell:

SUNDBERG'S HR IN THE '85 ALCS WAS A FLUUUUUKE!!!!

OK I got that out of my system. The Royals were a model franchise that had some very good players and they played the game the right way by being tough but not a bunch of hooligans. George Brett was one of the grittiest and best leaders baseball had seen in that era. It's amazing how much they got out of their farm system and how that all fell apart when money became even more important today then it was back then.

Oh and a tragedy for that franchise was the death of manager Dick Howser at the pinnacle of his success as a manager. In my humble opinion he'd still be managing today and would probably be in the mold of a Bobby Cox. I don't know if he would've stuck all these years with KC but he'd definitely be successful no matter where he would wind up at.

Oh, and I loved watching Quissenberry (sp) What a pitching motion!

I just love those Steve Balboni, Rob Deer, Pete Incavilia (sp) type players from the 80s.

Maybe it's just me, but someone weighing less than three tenths of a pound doesn't have much beef on him.

I think it was just an overall statement on how the Royals of this era just get overlooked as a great team being compared to teams like the Mets, Dodgers, and A's.
