White Sox acquire Nick Swisher from A's

The White Sox have acquired switch-hitting outfielder Nick Swisher from the Oakland Athletics in exchange for three minor league players, pitcher Gio Gonzalez, pitcher Fautino De Los Santos and outfielder Ryan Sweeney. The trade was announced Thursday afternoon by Kenny Williams, White Sox general manager and senior vice president.

Dang man...That Gio Gonzalez guy is some serious trade bait.

My Phillies got him in the Abreu deal, and then shipped him to Chicago for F'ing Freddy Garcia...Bum! Now he's with the A's, and you know Billy Beane knows how to acquire pitching. He'll be in the spacious A's ballpark too...

Watch, Gio Gonzalez is going to be a star now that he's w/ Oakland. They get rid of Haren, and then get younger w/ the lefty Gio Gonzalez. Good deal for the A's.

Great move by Kenny. They still will be a distant 3rd at best in the AL Central, but before this move, people were thinking they'd barely beat the Royals out. They still have some needs but look much better now.

You may be thinking of a different deal. The Phils got him from the Sox in the Thome/Rowand deal.

Fautino was the SAL's best prospect this last year, Sweeney is MLB ready, and Gonzalez is a top 10 lefty prospect in the minors. He'll likely get a shot in the A's rotation this season.

This should be interesting for the A's. I like their approach, but I wonder how their fans will react. They have absolutely no chance to contend this year, but they should be ready to contend again when their new stadium opens.

Nice job White Sox. Trading your top 2 pitching prospects and a former top prospect(and 8th ranked prospect) for Swisher.

How many years does Swisher have left on his current deal? Didnt the A's trade Haren with 2 years left counting next year? Why are they so quick to trade their young talent?

That Billy Beane knows how to acquire pitching. Dan Meyer for Tim Hudson seems to be working out really well for them.

Re: White Sox acquire Nick Swisher from A's

It appears that Billy Beane is throwing in the towel before the season even starts.
The A's seem to have re-loaded their farm system picking up 9 players in 2 trades which i guess they needed to do. But with a starting rotation that looks like Joe Blanton and pray for rain (assuming he is not dealt before the season starts) and a lineup that was not very good offensively before trading Swisher it looks like it is going to be a long year in Oakland.

Good pickup for the White Sox. Swisher will likely play CF and getting to hit in a lineup with guys like Thome, Konerko and Dye should help Swisher get back on track offensively.

Re: White Sox acquire Nick Swisher from A's

I know at first blush this looks great for the White Sox, but look a little deeper. Apparently, Swisher was not on the market, but the Sox called with an offer that Beane couldn't turn down.
The Sox were desperate for a center fielder, and the got Swisher, who was a fan favorite, but pretty inconsistent after coming on strong two years ago.
They want him to play center, which should be interesting in the least.
I'm actually pretty happy with the trade, the A's are restocking the farm system. We already knew we were not going to compete in the AL West this year (with the Angles and the Mariners restocking). Now we get better for the future Cisco Field!

BTW according to Susan Slusser, there are grumblings within the Sox organization that this was Kenny Williams' worst trade yet.

As with all trades, only time will tell.

the AL West is such a joke...i think this is Anaheim's problem, they win by default, and then are put up against teams that have had real competition all year...well, at least more than in the ALW...
