    Hit charts question

To any deep stat nuts out there (or people that just know), how do they work? I mean the hit charts that have the basic three splits, but are divided into infield and outfield as well (meaning six percentages whose sum is 100).

What I mean is, is it where the ball first hits the ground? Where the ball is first picked up? Say someone hits a ground ball but goes up the middle for a base hit. Does that go for the infield split (because it first touched the ground in the infield) or the outfield split (because it ultimately reached the outfield)?

I'd like to know because I'm going to start doing these stats for this one softball team, and it would be much better if I did it correctly, I guess.

Thanks in advance to anyone who knows.

I'm pretty sure it's where the ball lands. Otherwise you wouldn't see too many hits for the infield seeing as how infield singles are pretty rare.

      True.

So, should I assume that a ball that clears the infield dirt should be a hit to the outfield, and anything else (assuming it is hit in play, of course) is considered to be in the infield?

And what about foul ball fly outs?

Thanks again, that answer alone is a big help.

FB outs are placed in the nearest zone

Nope, it's where the ball ends up. Take a look at some of the hit charts on MLB.com. There aren't that many in the infield, and 95% are to the third base side.

Very interesting. I only say this because I think I remember on MLB 2K6 with Inside Edge, all six percentages were pretty evened out. I can't recall anymore.

But you guys have been a great help thus far. Thanks.

Are you referring to hit distribution percentages instead of a hit chart?

                Are you talking about this?

According to retrosheet it depends on the type of play.
