If the Mets get Johan Santana will they win the NL?

As a Phillies fan I'm of course concerned to see that the Mets are getting more involved in a deal for Santana. If they get Santana how do you think they fair to win the NL? How would that staff stack up to the rest of the MLB...Boston, NYY, Padres, Dodgers...? Where would you rank them if they got Santana?

    Thier starting 5 would be...

    Santana
    Martinez
    Maine
    Hernandez
    Perez

Nothing is a lock...but it sure would help.

IMO...Maine could definitely be a #1 on most teams(including the Mets). He's very good right now and improving steadily.
If Martinez can stay strong....we know what he's capable of. Will he ever be a #1 again? I doubt it, but he's a solid #2 if healthy.
Perez is much better(and squared away) than people think. The guy has filthy stuff....electric fastball....he's done nothing but get better and calm down since coming from his 3-13 stint in Pittsburgh(and then coming to the Mets) in 2006.
Hernandez is what he is...pretty darn good when he's around....
Pelfrey is better than his record.....he might get it together this year.

NOW if you put Santana in there and move everyone down a slot....I'd say that's a pretty good starting staff

I hate questions like this. No one can tell the future so how is one supposed to answer such a question?

Oh, how I loathe these questions and people who believe the best team on paper is the best team on the field.

Fiiiine, I dont loathe the people, but still loathe the question.

I still don't think they'd have the starting pitching depth but who knows.

Well no one really cares about your opinion since it offers no insight so go "loathe" somewhere else "hoser".

I'm not saying their the best team or anything, but that they would be pretty damn formiddable if they got Santana.

Oh, how I loathe people who who post responses like these.

Dono what you're getting offended about. Your posts always involve predicting the future. If we had the answers, you think we'd be on OS?

If you asked, 'Does getting Santana make them better, cause them problems, upset their pitchers?', OK, but this question is ridiculous.

It's just something to talk about dude. What are we going to sit here and debate why Rolen was traded for Glaus. Santana and where he lands seems to be the hot topic around Baseball right. Why not talk about it???

Tell you what...So that I don't upset you maybe I should PM you anytime I want to post a thread/reply. That way you won't have to into loathing mode.

Other than this dude does anybody else have any thing constructive to say???

Now that it is clear Peji that you hate this thread I hope I won't see another post in it by you.

Really.....having two 15 game winners(Perez and Maine) and adding another(who could easily win 20 with the Mets....AND getting back Pedro Martinez is not enough?

Again, I think you're taking this a little personal. And you dont have to PM me about anything, just make relevant posts, not posts that assume we can predict the future.

                  Now, for constructive criticism.

When I was in New York, I got the feeling from Mets fans they're less than Yankee fans but dont want to admit it. Seems thats how the organization is, too. They know they're second best in the city, and thus, I doubt it matters who they have...right now, anyways.

Being a Met fan...and born and raised and still in N.Y.C......you couldn't be more wrong about Met fans.
However.....Yankee fans on the other hand feel like their team is above everyone else.....when in fact they haven't done anything for years. They are hurting as much as most won't admit it.
                    Sour, sour fans....

See, I dont know much about the fans of either. Just the impression I got from one summer in New York and a few summers in New Jersey a few years back.

Personally, I like the Mets more than the Yanks (could be because Im a Jays fan), but I hate the National League. I just dont like pitchers going up to back. Dont know why, just dont. However, I do think I remember studying how the National League came first, so a batting pitcher is the way the game was meant to be played.

The National League is a far better baseball experience IMO...It involves much more strategy than the AL.

                          Anyways...

I think that if the Mets got Johan and Pedro returned to health then that would be the best 1-2 punch in baseball. You would have to take the Mets in a 5 game series over anyone in the NL...(Hate to say it)...Because Santana, Martinez, and Maine would give opposing offenses a lot of trouble...Again depending on the health of Martinez.

I really fear a trade like this and hope and pray that Santana stays put or goes to Boston.

The Mets would certainly be viewed as the top team if they got Santana but sometimes after a collapse like the the one the team went through last year can lead to a much poorer showing in the standings. There have been enough change so far that should clean the Mets clubhouse of the atmosphere that was there in '07 but again you never know.

How is he not supposed to take the personal? I've seen more ridiculous threads and this is a legitimate SPECULATIVE baseball question. So, don't take this personally, but I dislike when people post in threads that they deem unworthy.

And, yes, adding Santana would make the Mets the favorite to win the NL IMO.
