    Cubs sign Jon Lieber

Good signing in my opinion. Low risk and high upside. 1 yr for 3.5 million is pocket change.

I think it will be a waste imo because he is 38 and I just dont see him doing anything for our team that much but he has always been a good player but not enough to start .

Low risk and high upside would have been Mark Prior.

High upside? If by upside you mean an ERA+ of 100~ at best, yeah.

Lieber in Philadelphia Language means "Bum"...

He had a decent yr or two w/us, but last yr was really disappointing he just can't be counted on. The guy can barely give you 6 innings in most outings. Good one Southside.

He is a better option that Jason Marquis or Ryan Dempster. Besides he will be the 5th starter.

You don't have much of a high upside in the majors if you can't break 85.

Marquis will be in the rotation (if not traded) but this signing probably means Dempster won't be, which may be a blessing in disguise.

I hope they keep Marquis. He really wasn't that bad last year imo.

OK, you pick A or B, and I'll tell you which one is which.

                    A - 3-6 with a 4.73 ERA in 78 IP

                    B - 12-9 with a 4.60 ERA in 191.2 IP

Both players had one complete game shutout. (One of which I attended at Wrigley)

I think it's obvious who is who, so if you think Marquis is worse, you're sadly mistaken, or living in the past.

Now that that's out of my system, I am glad we got him as a 5th starter, as Marquis would start above him in the rotation. I don't expect much from him, but I think he'll do OK for us, and won't hurt us.

If Marquis is as good as you point out. Why was he left off the playoff roster twice in 2 years...by 2 different teams?

Jaime Moyer was also left handed and neither were known as power pitchers like Mark Prior is. Also Maddux fastball has been in the low 90's basically his whole career.
