Why does EB ship out games 2 days before Best Buy?

Why is this?

WSB 2k3 ships 3/11 for EB but 3/13 for Best Buy


anybody know why this is, or is Best Buy just get their game later?

EB is considered to be a gaming store, where as Best Buy is a store that also sells games. That's why videogame stores EB, Software Etc, typically get their games before "retail" stores. They account for more videogame sales overall.

I used to work for Babbages (Software Etc.) in college. I have a friend who manages the local Best Buy. So I can answer this question pretty easily. When a new game is released, the game company (Sega, Nintendo, etc.) ships the game to both EB and Best Buy at the same time. EB and Babbages overnight ship them to their stores (well, 90% of the time, unless its a small, obscure title with no prepurchases). This gets the game to the store the next business day. Best Buy, on the other hand, just puts the games in with a regular shipment (which is usually shipped as cheaply as possible). This leads to a 2 to 3 day delay. Babbages and EB are a GAME based business. Most of their prices are higher than places like Best Buy, Target, etc. They are able to compensate for this by getting the items in earlier (because us gamers hate to wait for that new game.... don't believe read the forums on a game release day ). Best Buy doesn't waste the money on faster shipping. They are willing to take the lost sales from Babbages, Etc. because 1.) they make most of their money off of other items.... TVs, computers, etc. 2.) They know that these other stores will sell out and they will eventually move the product.

P.S. Occasionally, both Best Buy and EB get the games at the same time. This is because the company will deliver them to the stores a week or 2 in advance (but with steep fines for stores that sell the item early) so that the game will be wide spread on their specified release date. The reason is because large retail chains (Best Buy, CompUSA, Circuit City, etc) have the games sent to regional distribution warehouses first....where they are then sorted and sent out to the stores on the retail level---adding another day or two to the shipment. All retail chains do this.

The specialty stores (EB, GameStop) have them fedex-ed (overnight) directly to each store from the game companies themselves.
