A better way to look at OBP

Baseball fans understand that outs are the only scarce resource in baseball. They understand that you only get 27 of them, and that each one you use puts you that much closer to running out of chances to score. So instead of tallying on-base percentage, which really only seems to resonate with folks who already buy in to advanced performance metrics, how about focusing on outs?
Very interesting stuff. Check out the entire post; it’s really worth thinking about.

Re: A better way to look at OBP

I've tried showing how a crappy OBP leads to a ton of outs. It doesn't work. People believe what they want to believe and look at the stats (and ignore the stats) that suit them. Some people are just stuck in the past and, believe me, there is absolutely nothing you can argue to get them to change their mind. It is not possible to convince them that a player with 200 hits and 30 HR and 90 RBI in a season is a worse hitter than a player with counting stats like 190 hits and 25 HR and 70 RBI, even if the first player had 53429385 at-bats and the second player had 190.

OBP is easily the most important basic stat, imo.
