The Evils of Ticket Packages: Yet Another Distraction Thread

Heres Something that drives me nuts here in NY and I know it goes on elsewhere. The Mets have these things called eight packs which they use to unload tickets to crappy games by combining them with some of the hot ticket games. Not a bad idea except they withhold about half of the stadium for eight packs even after single game seats go on sale. Right now opening day is "sold out" if you try to buy a ticket however you can call up and order one of those God awful eight packs for about 200 bucks and you'll get an opening day ticket, as well as a ticket to a Yankee game and 6 other horrid wednesday evening games vs.teams like the royals. If they wanna do this for those Subway Series games people seem to love so much i wouldn't mind but by lumping Opening day in with them they make it harder for casual fans or families to come out to Opening Day. One person can afford 200 bucks and after all you'll get opening day and a subway series game but a family of 4 is not gonna shell out 800 bucks to go to opening day. And even though I could care less about them, what about Yankee fans. If they wanna see the Yanks at Shea they have to buy 7 other games they probably have no intention of going to possibly including opening day. Now I'm a hardcore fan and this year I'll make it to more than 8 games including opening day (got tix from a broker) so it's not even the price but I just am really ticked that the team would hold tickets hostage like that.
What do you guys think? Am I way off base here? Mets Fans? Yanks Fans? I think this goes on with the Cubs and Chisox too? How bout anywhere else? In the words of that old dude that would come on WPIX late at night after the news," What's Your Opinion? We'd Like To Know."

Re: The Evils of Ticket Packages: Yet Another Distraction Thread

This is becoming a common ticketing practice among professional teams.

Basically, the number of people that will buy ticket packages just for the sake of going to the "important" games (opening day, interleague rivalry, divisional rival) is enough to sell out the stadium for those games.

Plus, the team sells more tickets for lower-priority games than it might normally sell without the ticket package.

You are right, this situation sucks for families. But, the team knows that it is going to sell out the park with the packages anyways, so why not increase revenue?

There are also teams that have started charging more $$ for a single game ticket to a more popular game, than the average - or lower revenue- games.

    It's all about the Benjamins.

Yeah the Mets are doing that too this year. I actually don't mind that as much because I feel it's a better way to generate revenue from those games without forcing us to buy packages, plus you get a small break for those weeknight games. Oh well. At least the Video Games aren't raising ticket prices.....yet.

This ticket package thing has been going on for years, and personally i dont mind it, because some of the packages are actually pretty good. I personally like getting tickets for 5 to 10 games a yr, and mostly on the weekends or friday nights, so they arent for me, but im sure there are those that eat them up, so its all good.

BTW, the Mets dont play the Royals this yr, I had tickets last yr to that series, but had to give them to a friend. They also dont play Oak either, which kinda pisses me off, but we do get Ana, Sea, and Tex, so everything should be nice.

The Royals thing was just an example. Don't get me started on Interleague play. It's been terrible since they went to six subway games. This year only one non-Yankee team comes to shea and we don't get to see the A's at all. Do we honestly need 6 of those damn subway exhibition games.

Also, I'm not against ticket packages as a whole I just don't like that they hold back so many tickets. I think there should be a period before single seats go on sale when all the package stuff can be done so they can actually "sell" some tickets on that day when single seats go on sale. I've been to the last 7 Opening day and they never sold out right away until 2002, including the year after we went to the series. The team was horrible last year and opening day supposedly sold out in like an hour, yeah sure.

I actually got one online for like 30 bucks. It's funny the things people do. Apparently this guy did something I've been contemplating for years. He bought a group sales plan to opening day (hence no waiting in lines). Now He's selling them off online. Oh well I'll be damned if my 7 year streak gets snapped. I'll deal with that dude later

I got Mariners vs mets tickets for june 8th on day of ticket sales when they went on sale on feb 16th. I got loge reserved $33 each. The new ticket pricing with gold, silver, etc.. values is stupid as hell/
