for those that are unaware, you were allowed to create players but you had very limited attribute points to spend on these players. basically, you couldnt create a star player and add him to your team. BUT, from what i remember, as you played games and won, you earned $$ which in turn you could spend on making some players better by increasing some skills. IMO, it was so much better then today's games where you simply create the phenom you want without any effort/issue.
i just notied this on the spec for Inside Pitch and it reminded my - in some ways- of my old baseball stars gaming days.

i know its not the same, but its nice to see a game do something a little different, an added twist to player creation.
