Re: 3DO really dropped the ball with this year\'s HH

Even though I fear that I will get bashed here.....I too am not entirely happy with this incarnation of HH.

I will start by saying I have been a high heat player since it's first game on the PC in 99? The graphics were horrible but I got hooked on it's gameplay. I have played every years version since on PC and even liked the PS2 version last year. IT just feels like baseball.

Now I try the Xbox 2004 version and something feels weird. Even the pitcher batter interface seems slightly different. The timing.....the animation.....something makes it feel like I don't have as much control over the swing. And the hit's feel.....well...honestly more canned than on previous high heat games. I went back to my PC and played HH 2003 for a reference and it played great. I loved it and the hitting felt spot on. The instant I hit the button the bat head was in the zone. On XBOX 2004 the bat seems slower and I am having a hard time getting good wood on the ball. Therefore I go through games with way too many slow rollers and bloops to infielders and very few solid hits. Even solid hits for outs. In HH2003 for PC I make outs but I line out, fly out to deep outfield and hit rocket grounders that get scooped up for outs.

Now....that being said....I am only comparing HH to it's previous incarnations. I am not even referencing the other console baseball titles that are out there. I know from experience that it is the best game as far a realism goes.

Despite the little gripes I have about the way hitting feels the outcome of games seems accurate. The score and number of hits are about right. But I feel like some of the outcomes of at bats are predetermined a little too much. I've heard this complaint of previous HH titles but never felt it was true. But I don't entirely feel like I have as much say in what happens when I am at bat as I did in older versions.

One other thing I can say I noticed that feels like there is some level of scripting that I never saw in older HH games. I have played about 9-10 games so far and in each game there is at least one at bat where the CPU pitcher will throw me 3 straight balls. The pitcher has had masterful control up to this point and suddenly throws horrible pitches that are not even close to the plate. I then sit on the 3-0 fastball and the next pitch is FAT. Piped it right down the middle. I crush it for a HR. I felt great cause I worked the count and one the duel. But when this same thing started to happen every game and I always hit a HR or a double or at least a solid hit on a 3-0 pitch I started to feel like I was being gifted this hit. In other words the CPU was setting me up to crush it everytime this pattern of pitches happen. I hope I am wrong.

Again....I love HH in general but so far this version is just leaving me feeling a little "iffy". And every other time I tried the previous HH for the first time I was always excited and blown away.

Re: 3DO really dropped the ball with this year\'s HH

Jim416, I totally agree that 3DO needs to make even bigger strides next year to keep stride with the other baseball titles. But until another baseball game matches HH's gameplay, their following will return year after year as long as they make minor additions and don't screw with the gameplay. Hell, people were still buying Triple Play last year I believe 3DO does everything within their budget to make HH the best baseball game they have money to build. I think the throw animations alone are a monstorous step for this series, it shows they knew the animation or lack thereof last year needed fixed. They added franchise mode which was sorely needed to keep up with ASB and WSB. The Minor Leagues are a welcome addition as well. To me this game is leaps and bounds above last year's title. The sound was done but couldn't be implemented, I can live with that b/c it still plays the best game of baseball.

I don't care if MLB2004 ends up being sports game of the year!
I want the realest playing baseball game with better graphics and updated rosters, and as long as that game has added features and things that make the game better, and hasn't detracted from the game at all, I will continue to buy it for the reasons I like it. I will buy WSB as well, but will the gameplay be leaps and bounds above last year's? If it isn't, what are all of the new animations, player scaling, and all of the bling bling worth?

I can put a Ferarri body an a car and have a Pinto engine in it, and then what good is it? Oh, it looks nice until somebody pulls up to race you! Or untl you back into something

I do not buy a baseball game to feel like I am at a baseball game, I buy it to feel like I am playing in a baseball game. So, the crowd on a game doesn't matter to me, let them look like cardboard like my 7 year old daughter says HH's do! As long as they get louder a couple of times a game or when pertinent, I can live with that, that is why I have a CD changer

The atmosphere I want is the one I get about the 8th or 9th inning and I need to score at least one to tie it up. Runner on second, winning runner at the plate, butterflies in my stomach wondering what pitch is coming next at the same time remembering I need to be patient. Oh, and trying to be careful to get a good lead off 2nd so I can get a good jump on a single to the outfield, but being careful b/c the AI WILL try to pick me off at 2nd. And checking my line-up to see if there is a better match-up I can take advantage of by pinch hitting or running. After I manage to work through all of that, those next however many # of pitches IMO is what sets the gameplay and the pitcher/batter interface apart. The butterflies, the guessing, the strategic moves on both sides, the result when I get a single to tie the game or a 2 run shot b/c I worked the count and the pitcher was forced to throw my pitch and I GOT IT! And that is only one situation in one inning of one game in one season. Now that is one good game of baseball.

Re: 3DO really dropped the ball with this year\'s HH

For anyone who doesn't feel like they are in control of batting and the at bat is predetermined, here is your solution. Use the guess-pitch on every pitch. To me it provides a better challenge b/c you not only have to watch a pitcher's pattern the whole game, but you have to know his best pitches, what he throws in certain situations, and what he throws accurately. Then you have to wait on your pitch, and time it, and swing in the right zone. Then when you picked fastball and he throws you one belt high and you go up and get it and hit it out, there is no doubt you had control over what happened, I don't care what the Sim slider is at!

Batting using the Guess Pitch every game and every pitch brings you as close to a real Major League at-bat as any baseball video game offers. You earn the rewards, and just like real baseball, if you are witing on a fastball and the AI breaks you off a curve, you aren't going to get good contact on the ball 99% of the time. But you guess curve and he throws you a watermelon curve right over the plate, and you will get good wood on the ball.

                JordanFan,

I hear what your saying, but don't you think that a lot of people will start moving towards eye-candy with a little less gameplay than High Heat if 3DO can't keep up? If they can't keep up then sales go down and the gameplay everyone loves, no argument there, might not even be around.

I guess I'm saying they need to start investing in the game a little more or it will come back to bite them and the people who love the gameplay.

I've had it every year for the last 4 years, I liked last years alot. I wasn't crazy about this years when I started it. But the more I play it, the more I freaking love it. It takes a few tweaks, and it definately could have used some more smarts by the guys that make it, like with that pickoff thing. But over all I love it. I didn't think the announcing had changed much, but now I think there on cue more, and I have heard things I didn't here last year, with a little more realism. Even Chuck has a touch of excitement in his voice. Also theres lots of things I haven't seen before like slow rollers and more errors. I play on All pro, I have the AI computer hitting turned completely off. I have mine turned down 3 clicks. My scores and hits are still similiar to reality, (at least), and it seems to iliminate a tone of pick off throws. However, if I could ask 3DO one question, it would be What the Frock are you thinking pickoff wise. The dullest play in baseball next to the intentional walk. ( LOVE THE GAME THOUGH)

Trust me I'm not picking on you (in fact I agree), but have you noticed how everyone complains about crowd graphics looking like cardboard, yet EVERY baseball game on the market uses the exact same technique for crowd graphics? They are all equally flat! The only difference between games is the smoothness of the animations and the smoothness of the edges on each person's picture.

And call me crazy, but I think crowds that are constantly waving their arms up and down look even more fake than poorly animated ones that sit still for the most part.
