Re: Brian Bannister, the next Billy Beane?
Yeah, I read this after it was linked at FJM(I'm guessing that's where you saw it, hehe), though I had read his interviews at MLBrumors.
This is really interesting, and the guy seems to take advantage of all of the knowledge he's gained. Also, has anyone tried to mess around with the pitch/fx data?
I attempted to, but I'm terrible with computer stuff, so I quit. -

Yeah, I saw it at FJM.
I haven't messed with the pitch/fx data myself, but it is definitely interesting. Every park will have the cameras installed this year, so there will finally be a full set of data for all pitchers. A couple of the contributors at baseballanalysts.com use the data quite a bit, as does ussmariner.com (and many other blogs I would assume).Member of The OS Baseball Rocket Scientists AssociationComment

Re: Brian Bannister, the next Billy Beane?
Bannister's definitely a smart one. He actually realizes how much (or little) he affects balls after they are put in play. How many pitchers in the league do you think will admit that?
Another smart one is Chris Young of the Padres. He actually realizes that pitchers are more successful worrying about the hitter than being concerned over a base-stealer. Someone has to drive them in so who cares what they do so long as you can keep hitters from making solid contact.
That's why those two guys are probably two of my favorite pitchers to watch and pay attention to."It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

Young has also let PETCO work in his favor. He's a flyball pitcher in a park where HR's go to die.
Heck, maybe Towers knows what he's doing every once in a while.Comment

I think Towers has always known what he was doing. The Padres have been one of the most competitive teams in baseball over the last decade. Not many teams fit that bill."It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied.
