ESPN is really pushin this phrase..."WALK OFF" !!

I dunno....I dont ever remember hearing this term until this year and now with every mornings highlights I seem to hear it on ESPN and even on the FAN radio station.....Is this a new term or have I just been living to long chained naked in the cellar with no shaving utencils??.......In fact I'm not even sure I know what this term even means...."Walk Off Homerun"....I'm gonna use my best deductive reasoning and guess that its a player that hits a homerun after the previous batter was intentionally walked??...its the only thing i can think of that makes sense

A "walk-off" homerun is when a player hits a home run to end the game. For example, yesterday, Jim Thome hit a grand slam with the Indians trainling 6-5 in the bottom of the ninth to win the game. Therefore, Thome hit a "walk-off" grand slam. The teams "walked off" the field after the homer was hit...

No need to feel stupid! Honestly, I think the term has only been around since this year. ESPN "invented" it on SportsCenter one night, and it stuck...

The Term May have been around for awhile but I only remember hearing it used since last year and ESPN does seem to push it more than anyone.

The Japanese have always had the term "Sayanora" Home run for a game ending homerun. I even remember hearing about that before I heard anyone using Walk off homerun.

I have been a die hard baseball nut since I was 7 years old, and no, the term "walk-off" has not been around forever.
I started hearing it in the beginning of the 2000 season, and I am pretty sure ESPN is responsible for it. The only place I saw it at first is on SportsCenter and on their tickers at the bottom of the screen. It eventually caught on, and now everyone uses it.

Where were you last year? I remember asking myself the exact same questions last year - which was when I thought it started.

An interesting ironic twist - I remember listening to ESPN radio last year, and one of the guys went off on like a 15 minute rant about "where did this term come from, and how did it get started anyways? I've never heard it until this year"

I first heard it last year, when Rheal Cormier and Turk Wendell of the Phillies gave up a combined 5 walkoff homers in a 2 week span.

That is not right at all. There is the "Best Damn Sports Show" along with many others like the local news and stuff like that.

Sportcenter is the best show at sports highlights and other coverage. But "Best Damn Sports Show" is good, because they talk about sports issues. I'd rather see SportsCenter, because they entertain thier audience with their highlights.

Until a year or two again, I always heard everyone say "game-winning home runs." I guess the term "walk-off" separates GW-HR's in the bottom of the last inning from those hit in the top of the last inning. I think its a pretty good term.

the Best Damn Sports Show Period, is the best damn sports show period....they just don't really spend too much time on baseball.
