    Wrigley Field to be renamed?

I heard an interview from Bob Costas with the new GM of the Cubs and they were talking about the possibility of selling corporate sponsorship for the stadium and renaming it. Are you kidding me?

On the lighter side....as a lifelong Cardinals fan I would like to see it named either Tampax Field or Vagisil Stadium. Either would be appropriate...

Wouldn't that just make Cardinal losses at Wrigley even more embarrassing?

This has been rumored for 2 months, Sam Zell is a greedy old man that wants more money than he knows what to do with.

They should've sold the team to Colangelo or Cuban. Historically tho this makes sense as Wrigley Field is the original corporate sponsor stadium as William Wrigley named it after his gum company, not himself.

Colangelo and Cuban are in the running to buy the team from Zell. They haven't sold the team yet.

I will be the first to say that Wrigley Field is a corporately sponsored name, but the fact is that if they change the name, I can almost guarantee that someone will assassinate Sam Zell. It doesn't even necessarily have to be a Cub fan but just some nutball baseball purist. I'm all for the idea of business, but certain things transcend the normal dealings of business. This is one of them.

I wholeheartedly agree. If I were a violent man I'd be tempted to do that myself!

Isn't Wrigley Field already corporately named? If this is what the Cubs need to do to end a century of pathetic baseball then more power to them for realizing that.

But thats not the reason Zell is doing it. He is doing it so he can stick more money into his pocket, not so he can spend more money on the team itself.

Zell didn't even want the team in the first place. He wanted the company for the newspaper and the other things the company owned. The Cubs just happened to come with all of those things.

I think one of the worst things that could come of this is for Zell to realize what he has in the Cubs and decides to keep the team. I never thought we would end up with a worse owner than the Trib, but he may be it.

                      Touche!

As a baseball fan, there are some things that are sacred.....and Wrigley is one of them. Sure it's a sort of corporate sponsorship, the same way that Busch Stadium is. But it's also named after the family that owned the team, same as Busch. I just can't fathom Cubs fans allowing this to happen.

Then again, I'm sure they'll do something like name it Coca-Cola Stadium at Wrigley Field to give the illusion it's still the same.

How does it make him greedy that he bought Trib for $8.2 billion and has said from the start he has no interest in the Cubs. If he thinks he can get more money by selling separately, it makes him smart, not greedy, so he can recoup some of his investment. I'm a Cubs fan (grew up on the North side) so of course I wouldn't want to see this but it's a bit much to say he's being greedy doing this.

Regardless, I doubt it will happen.

It's smart business-wise, but as I said, if the guy wants a price on his head, he's moving in the right direction. Certain things shouldn't be judged by how much business sense they make, and this is one of them.

It is the same no matter what. The name changes, big deal? I wasn't aware that took the "aura" away from the place. This is much to do about nothing, all it's doing is adding to the "woe is us" aspect that some fans take on. Call it whatever they want - it's still the exact same place.
