    Broken Bats

Is it just me or are that a hell of a lot of broken bats so far this year? I just watched the Braves/Pirates game and I saw at least 4 bats break, hell Sanchez broke a bat on an changeup that was outside. During commercial breaks I switched to the some of the other games and it seemed like every game had a bat breaking.

Maybe I'm just getting old and my memory is failing me, lol, but I don't remember so many broken bats in the past.

    lol Abreu just broke one.

I'm not a scientist, but I'm wondering if the cold weather may have something to do with it?

Weird, but you might be right. I saw at least 3 broken bats last night in the M's - Rangers game in just the first 4 or so innings, and that was with Jason Jennings and his 87mph "heat". Maybe it's a combo of cold weather and generally pitchers being ahead of hitters early in the year? Hitters being just slightly off on average swings? It's a good point though and I have noticed it just in Seattle games.

Alot of the bats today are made from maple wood instead of whatever was used before (ash I think?). It's a softer, lighter wood, and thus breaks easier.

Yep, it flexes more though the swing (imagine a PGA Tour driver). Also the handles are getting skinnier and skinnier to allow for more flex.
