He also played pretty good for a guy who's allegedly 50ish too!

He had a pretty interesting career that's for sure.

I remember when the Braves signed him during the '01 season out of the Mexican League and thinking it was the most desperate move imaginable. But he quickly became one of my favorite players during his tenure.

Too bad he was out of the majors those years or he'd likely have over 3,000 hits.

He's just too nice of a guy not to like. I felt the same as you when they signed him. Didn't take me too long to change my mind. He's a great guy, and I wish him the best with his retirement.

This is possibly the saddest day in baseball.

The Braves should still have this guy.

If he's not a coach by next year then baseball is really messed up.
"It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

Looking at Franco's resume i don't think anyone has logged more miles in their playing career than he did.

Franco said his plan was to play 'til he was 50 then retire and work his way thru the minor leagues and back to the majors as a coach. While he did not make it 50 (or did he?, we'll never know for sure) as a player i'm sure that somewhere out there is a coaching job for him someday.

Last I heard, and this was like a week ago, he was a hitting coach for a team in the Mexican League as well as playing for them. I thought I heard he was hitting .278.

Actually I think Julio's age is real. After 9/11 he aged got two years added on.

Now the guy I really want to know about is Renteria. He just looks old.

Yeah, Renteria's always looked far older than his DOB.

However, I just can't agree with you that Julio's age is real. I'm sticking to my belief that he is actually 89 years old.
