If you saw the YouTube video of the guy imitating MLB players, his Damon swing is rather spot on... shifting outward, pulling off, and letting go. Extension plus pull-off means no real top hand strength on contact. If you can't exert enough force on the ball, it will all go on the bat instead.

However, I agree with the bat handles. In fact, whenever I get a new wooden bat (not because they break, because they just wear out), I tape and tar those things like no tomorrow. I can't even wrap my fingers all the way around the handle. And you know what? It's a great feeling. I hate thin handles; never use them. They make the bat feel too "top-heavy" anyway.
yeah man it's funny... my friend plays in a wooden bat league and he's already shattered so many of his thin-handled bats, and my little brother who plays baseball from Beginning of spring to the end of summer, with a lot of wooden bat tourneys... and he has yet to break his fat-handled bat that he's had for three years now. It's not like it's doing less for him either... he's cranked a few homers in the 350 foot range last year.

It is doing less for him. His barrel is not as big as it could be because the handle weighs more. If the handle was smaller, the bat would weigh less, so his swing would speed up. This may not actually make a difference, but the players do and that is why they get small handles and then shave them down even more when they get the bat.

See, this doesn't make sense. It's not about how much the bat weights, it's about how much the barrel weighs. Like I said, I tape my bat handle to be very thick. Though the overall mass of the bat is heavier than it previously was, it actually works a little more as a counterweight. The bat becomes less top-heavy and the weight is now more seemingly distributed throughout the bat as opposed to that one end.

One way to make the bat lighter is to cut in that concave area at the end of the barrel. Takes off a couple ounces without any real difference in the bat's performance.

It's a part of the game...bats break...be on the lookout for it. I'm sorry for the coach but it was his own fault. Get out of the way fella!

These bats aren't breaking like they used to though. They are shattering.
