Re: Ken Griffey Jr. headed back to Seattle

for those of you not familiar with Griffey or the situation here's some quick facts:

-Griffey is a 10-and-5 player, and thus can veto any trade he's included in.

-There's been many rumors that Griffey hasn't liked the way he's been received by Reds fans and though he will never come out and say it, a trade out of Cincy would be welcomed by Griffey if he were to go to the right situation.

-He DOES NOT want to be a DH so if Seattle were to trade for him they would have to guarantee him that he would play in the field. Truth is he's not happy that he was moved from center to right but hasn't complained about publicly.

-Griffey's bat has slowed a bit. Sure he hit 30 homers last year but he has just 4 this year, and his averaged has continued to drop (from .277 last year to .254 this year). You can site injury concerns, but he has been healthier in the last few years than the first few with Cincy, playing in 144 last year, 109 in 2006 and 128 in 2005.

-Griffey is a free agent at the end of this year but has a player option for next year so basically if he decides he wants to remain in Cincinnati under his current contract, he can. Is it likely? No, but the possibility does exist.

We have heard that Griffey would probably waive his no-trade clause to return to Seattle. Seattle, Chicago and Atlanta are on Griffey's short trade list. It is likely that he will only waive his no-trade clause if his option for next season is exercised before the trade.
Seattle needs to do something to get that team on track. I don't know if trading for Griffey is the answer (don't really know whats left on the farm to give for him) but it certainly couldn't hurt.

I said he's contract is about to run up meaning end of season I didn't say his contract runs out next week.

Re: Ken Griffey Jr. headed back to Seattle?

Why would Seattle add an aging $16m/year bat (w/no glove) to a team that is already out of playoff contention? If they want Griffey they can have him next year for about 1/3 of the cost.

Trading for him makes zero sense...which probably means he'll be a Mariner by the weekend.

Take into consideration that the Mariners GM is a moron and you basically answer your own question.
