MLB is toying around with the idea of replays

    http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/s...=ESPNHeadlines

Thoughts? I don't think there's too many opportunities to screw up home run calls, I'd have liked replays to be used at least for home plate calls if not calls at all the bases.

the games are long enough as it is; I think it should be just for close home run calls, otherwise every close call would get reviewed

I'm all for replay on home run calls, but thats it. That way they won't take long and it won't have to be used very often.

Well regarding length of games that's a separate issue. In fact, MLB has once again chewed out the umpires to get them to enforce those rules again. They started it on a limited basis last night and now every game will have those rules. We'll see how long it lasts this time around. I know Vincente Padilla would be piling up walk totals based on how long he takes between pitches!

As for replays, I don't mind it for close HR calls but for all the hoopla surrounding the Delgado non HR call it didn't look like a HR to me. It looked like it hit the top of the wall and smashed into the side of the foul pole, hence it would only have been a ground rule double IMO.

I'm OK with it as long as it's limited to home runs.

PayRod got screwed out of a Home Run the other night at Yankee Stadium, the ball clearly hit the yellow stair case which is a Home Run but the umpires said it hit off the wall so Rodriguez wound up stuck at second. Given two really bad calls on the umpires in less than a week (oddly, in the same stadium) Baseball does need instant replay, at least for questionable Home Run calls.

If it hits the wall and then hits the foul pole, isn't that a home run?

I always thought that was a ground rule double? Oh well it's a moot point now anyways. Either way it was a very questionable and most likely a bad call by the umpires.

Indians got screwed by it tonight.

Francisco hit a Big Fly to left field and it bounces off the rail and bounces back.

Umps say no homer when it clearly shows on replay that it was a homer.

                  I hate umps.

100% no on that, an umpire is in the vicinity to make those calls. Fair/Foul and Homeruns should be the only thing to be reviewed or they should place umpires at the wall

They have blown at least 3 or more HR calls recently - not just Delgado..

Beltran in the beginning of the year, Delgado, A-Rod, and again the other night to Ben Francisco of the Indians.. The problem with the Delgado issue is that the 3rd base ump ruled it correctly, however, the home plate ump (with a worse view) overruled him.. Replays clearly show that it hit the pole and no wall...

These umps are getting bad with this stuff.. only review HR's.. nothing else

I say homeruns and close plays at the plate.

Another blown home run call during the Indians game.

                          They NEED instant replay.

Instant replay would be great. Really necessary.

Kind of awkward that we're seeing so many blown home run calls in a matter of a week.

I bet we don't see another one almost all season.

They should still add Instant Replay. It won't slow the game down. It'll hardly even be used in a game. It's very rare that a home run is that questionable. It's just been an awkward week.
"It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace
