        In interleague, a NL team can only use the pitcher to bat if the home team (the AL team, obviously) agrees to it, in which case the AL team must also use a pitcher to bat. And there's no chance in hell for that to happen.

          Is the DH rule just for the pitcher? I've always thought you could DH for anybody starting in the field. In fact, I think its happened before. Time for some research.

          EDIT: Ok, in MLB you can ONLY DH for the pitcher, but you do not have to DH for the pitcher. The pitcher can hit for himself if the manager chooses so.

          Most amateur associations allow DH'ing for anyone in the field.

            No team is EVER required to use a DH. It just makes little sense not to.

            Rule 6.10(b):
            It is not mandatory that a club designate a hitter for the pitcher, but failure to do so prior to the game precludes the use of a Designated Hitter for that game.

                Apparently Willis and Mike Hampton used to request to hit at times when they played in AL parks

                  The Yankees used to use Rick Rhoden as a PH at times as well.
