Jeter voted most overrated player by 495 of his peers

    http://www.knucklecurve.com/derek-je...rrated-player/

Derek Jeter, the superstar shortstop on the New York Yankees, has been voted the most overrated player in Major League Baseball. The vote was a poll of 495 current players.

Jeter got 10% of the vote to lead the way in the most overrated category. Although it’s difficult to rate Jeter as the most overrated player in the game, he isn’t exactly having a huge season in 2008. The 33-year-old Yankee is hitting .276 with four homers and 32 RBI.

Jeter’s batting average is lower than any season since his rookie year in 1995. Since then, he’s never batted lower than .290.
The good news for Jeter and the Yankees is that Jeter almost always plays better as the season goes along. In his career, he’s a much better hitter after the All-Star break than before the All-Star break.

Currently, the Yankees are making a run up the standings. Winners of seven straight games, New York is 40-33 and five games behind the AL East leading Boston Red Sox. In the race for the wild card, the Yankees are 3.5 games behind the Tampa Bay Rays.

Ever since that play in 2001 vs the A's in the playoffs I've begun to like Jeter.

    I don't think he's overrated at all....over 2400 hits. c'mon man

It looked more like a list of most overpaid than overrated. Arod is the 3rd most overrated? Cmon. And Barry Zito is second? Does anyone rate Zito highly anymore?

"Ironically, when SI asked MLB players in a separate survey last week, "Whom would you pick to build a team around?", A-Rod ranked first and Jeter second, perhaps offering a slight contradiction."

I don't think any player is jealous of Youkilis's salary.

5 of the top 6 come from Boston or New York. I'd say that has more to do with it (thanks to ESPN) than salaries, otherwise you'd see guys like Torii Hunter, Todd Helton, and Ichiro on the list.

How is Jeter not overrated. He hits for average and pretty much that's it. He has no power, doesn't drive in runs that well even for a #2 hitter, has average speed, is an average fielder at best with limited range. If he didn't play in NY and was uglier, most people would hardly know of him.

What do you mean he doesn't drive in runs? He always hits for a high average, and hits for a high average with runners in scoring position. What else do you want him to do?

His power is fine for a shortstop, and he has better than average speed.

He is not having a very good year so far, but throughout his career he has consistently been one of the top few offensive shortstops in the league, some years the best.

Jeter isn't overrated as a hitter. He's probably one of the most consistent hitters of his generation. It's in the field where he's overrated like nothing else. People talk of him as if he's one of the best fielding SS but really he's average at the position.

I've said it before...Derek Jeter is one of the best players of this generation and one of the greats of all time...and he is still overrated only because he plays in NY. If he played for the Kansas City Royals you wouldn't hear half as much as you do...it's not Jeter's fault and he does all he can on the field. It's the media that overblows everything he does.

Name me one year where he was the best offensive SS, never mind some years. Maybe one year he had the highest average by a nose but was woefully behind both Arod and Nomar in HR's and RBI's as well as being an inferior fielder to both. I think the most HR's he ever hit was 24 and I don't think he's come close to driving in 100RBI's. Yeah he was batting 2nd mostly but with those stacked Yankees lineup you had hitters 1 thru 9 who would be on base constantly that he would have a chance to drive in.

First off, if you are going to use a meaningless stat like RBI, why even bother?

2nd, 2006 he was the best offensive shortstop, and it isn't even up for debate. While A-Rod was a shortstop he was always behind A-Rod, though nobody would ever try and argue he's a better player than A-Rod so that is irrelevant. Through the late 90's early 2000's he was always comparable or better than Nomar while playing in a much tougher park for right handed hitters.

BTW, Jeter hit for 100 RBI's once and also came close with 97 another time, so if you are going to use meaningless stats, at least get them right.

The fact that he has multiple Gold Gloves is mind-boggling. You hit the nail on the head. He was a phenomenal offensive player for a while but I do think he's starting to slow down offensively- he's had a dreadful season.

Yes, he has good range to his right. To his left he is an absolute statue, one of the worst I've seen. The Gold Glove is a joke though- David Wright had no business getting one either last season (I'm not just hating on the Yanks). Wright makes a ton of spectacular plays but he also makes a load of bonehead plays. Kevin Youkilis- a Gold Glove?
