I once tried to fit my small-ish Giants hat on me, and my back went out of place. Sometimes these things happen.

Oh well... time to add this to my All-Bizarre Injury Team list.

I've "popped" something in my back reaching down to put in a CD into the drive while sitting at my PC. Hurt for several days. I'd lose my breath if I twisted funny it was so painful. I've pulled something in that spot a few times over the last 5 years or so. Sucks getting old.

Same exact pain I've had (you described it perfectly with the breathing part). It's a bitch, ain't it?

I have the same one spot, but mine is around my right shoulder blade. I've pulled it taking a swing in baseball, sliding in baseball, waking up, boogie boarding... you name it.
