You know how many reds fans were pissing and moaning about this when the reds acquired him from the cubs, almost NO one believed he would even stay sober, and didn't want him since he'd have to stay on the 25 man roster all year long. This is exactly how it would've been everywhere else, yeah, he turned out to be awesome but you would've still complained until he showed something. We didn't know he was actually going to stay sober and that's probably why the cubs didn't keep him. Also, like another person in this thread said, I'm pretty sure it was either a favor by the Cubs to select him and trade him to the reds, or the reds already traded for the pick before the draft...I'm not 100% sure on this though.

I believe last year you had Jacque Jones and/or Craig Monroe as you OFers correct?

Sorry, i'm going to go with the guy who has actually played in the MLB rather than a guy who never played past A-ball.

There are many more things you could go after Hendry for *I mean, seriously, Jacque Jones?* but this is complete hindsight on your part.

Especially one that only hit .260 in 2006 in low A ball when he came back from his suspension , it was only 15 games but there wasn't much to be impressed about there. Oh yeah, no homeruns either, just sayin.

Jacque Jones has sucked since day one. Monroe didn't come until way later.

Look, Jim Hendry has made some nice moves and I shouldn't get crazy over something that probably was never going to happen.

I am your typical disgruntled Cubs fan. It has been 33 years for me and more for others. I'm not sure if this is the year, but the more this carries on, the more agitated we get. I know I can't be the only one.

I'm pretty sure that was the case as well. The Reds wanted him since Jerry Narron was the manager at the time, and Jerry's son is essentially Josh's guardian angel. They also didn't think Josh would fall to them at their pick. So they got a deal in place with the Cubs. Too bad Krivsky thought Hamilton wouldn't stay healthy so he traded him away.

Re: Cubs fans, lets find Jim Hendry and beat the crap outta him.

To go over what everyone's been saying, in hindsight, with what we know today about how Josh Hamilton has done for himself, sure it was a bad move. However, the reasoning at the time was sound for the Cubs, I didn't hear any Cubs fans going crazy when it happened so you can't really pin this one on Hendry. If you were presented with the same situation as the GM at the time, with the way the Rule V Draft works, his previous problems staying in baseball and out of drugs and alcohol, and the probability that the Reds offered you cash in order to make this pick for them before the actual Rule V, you probably would've done the same thing. There have been much worse moves in the MLB that simply don't make sense in any time of evaluation (Zambrano for Kazmir is one I remember) but Hamilton for cash considering what he was at the time is not a ZOMGSTUPIDMANAGEMENT type of move.
