Just rented ASB for PS2.. My first game and questions/comments.

    Hiya everyone.

I just rented ASB for PS2. I played a game on rookie using the standard cursor, exaggerated pitching, and manual fielding.

To summarize my game, let me give you a figure: 19. That is how many times Vazquez struck me out. Oh yea, he also pitched a shutout, and held me to 2 hits.

Mind you, this is on rookie!

I know what the problem is. It's the batting cursor. It's the first time I have ever played a game that uses the batting cursor, and I would appreciate advice in terms of what settings to use to "ease" me into ASB's hitting.

I really like pitching a lot, and I also like how you can move pitch after you indicate location with the cursor.

I know I am doing something wrong with the batting cursor, so any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Please don't use this post to bash ASB and it's batting methods, I am just looking for tips on how to become a better batter as well as settings and such to help me ease into this new batting method.

The game seems solid. I saw the Phanatic dancing on the Phillies dugout and liked that a lot. There is some slowdown at times, but nothing that detracts from the gameplay.

Also, I have limited knowledge of the controls as Blockbuster doesn't include instruction booklets anymore.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, regardless of whether it is batting tips or settings advice. I am a newbie and seeking guidance.

This is my cry for help, so any help would be great!

    Thanks much

In the player options section try changing the pitches to "exagerrated", I believe this slows them down a bit. personally I dont enjoy exagerrated pitches because they move to much (especially the slurve). Also, try tilting the cursor up a bit because its hard to get base hits when its regualar. Don't follow the dot, watch the pitch out of the pitchers hand and react instantly to where you think the ball is going. You have to do this as a reaction because the pitches come in so fast that you don;t have time to think about it. 4 seam pitches move up, 2-seamers down, curve balls drop about a whole stike zone, sliders move to the side, changeups drop alot as well.

It took me a week to get used to the hitting. don't give up and you will get better.

Thanks for the replies and help.

BTW, these forums are great, there is always an interesting discussion going on that I can pop in and reply to, and all the users seem helpful and nice.

One more question about batting (though I can see many more questions about batting in the future ).

When aiming the cursor do you recommend using the D-Pad or Analog stick? I am playing on PS2.

The pitching aspect of this game is really sweet. And I love how you can easily shift outfielders and infielders. Its great to shift infielders and then get burned the other way. Realistic.

Anyway, I want to do as much as I can to hit better so I will practice a lot, but I also would like to know what you recommend aiming with to make it easier to line up the bat.

And one more question, when I change the 3-D cursors direction is there a button I can hit to "Reset" it back to normal, or do I have to manually set it back to the default (original) tilt?

Thanks again for the replies. I think once I become a better batter I will like this game a lot. The fielding and pitching (pitching especially) is really well done.

you have to pause the game and manually set the cursor back if you want to change it. use the analog stick for the cursor, it is much easier.

Ok thanks. I had been trying both and the D-Pad seemed faster but hectic, so I was going nuts with the cursor in the hopes of randomly contacting the ball.

I also have to remember to watch the pitch and not the cursor, as by the time I see the cursor it's usually too late to position the cursor..

It's neat tho that it's a learning experience, as long as with practice batting does become a possibility.

Right now I get excited about a foul tip into the net behind the catcher just because I managed to make contact with the ball.

ouch. get rid of that horrible batting cursor and switch to Zone batting!! much better success. it still takes skill, because you have to press the control stick in the direction where you want the bat head to go !!
