    The next Rick Ankiel?

Adam Loewen intends to come back as an outfielder

This is pretty sad in some ways as Loewen had a ton of potential. I thought that he would break out of his oft injured status and blossom into a very good ace type of pitcher. Alas, it was not meant to be.

Ankiel was always regarded as a very good hitting pitcher, Loewen has not swung a bat in a while. It will be interesting to see if he can make the transition.

The Pirates should consider this with John Van Benschoten. It's been a long time since he's been a hitter though. Great college hitter with 80 power on the scouting scale....the Pirates braintrust decided he would be a better pitcher.

I'm pretty bummed about Loewen. I was always convinced that he was a future 20 game winner year in and year out, but this had to happen. Best of luck to him as a hitter though.

Was it his complete inability to hit the strikezone to go along with a mediocre hit-rate that convinced you?

No one wins twenty games year in and year out anymore. Why'd you think this guy would be the one pitcher who could do it?

Another thing is, Ankiel had a solid 1 season, heck I seen him pitch a game against the Indians when they were good I think it was 1999, and he had 11 k's with 0 walks what really messed him up imo was a different catcher, he was so used to Mike Matheny, then he got hurt. And Ankiel hits for so much power, it's going to be hard for someone to do it better than him, and is great defensively with both the arm and the glove, he is also just going to continue to improve only been a mlb outfielder for 3 years. Having stories like Josh Hamilton and Rick Ankiel help this game out a lot

I was never sold on Adam. Sure he got some big wins vs. the Yanks, but being a 1 trick pony isn't gonna keep you in the majors. Seeing his huge career 1.6 WHIP, he wasn't going to win on any consistent basis. I've never seen him hit, so I can't say anything about that though. Good luck to him.

He's still putting up good numbers and leading (tied) the team in home runs...

I'm mixed on this. Deep down I hope he can turn it around. Realistically, though, I look at his offensive numbers and I'm not impressed. Sure, he had a good average in his one year at college, but had very little power. We do not need another weak hitter in this organization.
