    Recording saves correctly?

I warmup my closer in the 8th to bring him into the game when the 9th inning starts. We win the game yet he does not get a save. Why is that?

I cannot bring him into the game while i am still abtting in the 8th and can only do it in the 9th after we take the field.

How does a person earn a save, and is WSB recording it properly or not? Cuz I have yet to earn one.

    Thanks.

The margin of victory has to be 3 runs or less for your closer to earn the save (if I remember correctly). There are a couple more stipulations to earn a save but that's the big kahuna.

Ahh.. Thats it then. Its rare that I win at all with the Tigers, but the 2 times it has happened have been 8-2 and 6-1.

Thanks for the info. Learn something new everyday.

FYI.. Found this in the official rulebook..

            SAVES FOR RELIEF PITCHERS

10.20 Credit a pitcher with a save when he meets all three of the following
            conditions:

            (1) He is the finishing pitcher in a game won by his club; and

            (2) He is not the winning pitcher; and

            (3) He qualifies under one of the following conditions:

            (a) He enters the game with a lead of no more than three runs and pitches for
            at least one inning; or

            (b) He enters the game, regardless of the count, with the potential tying run
either on base, or at bat, or on deck (that is, the potential tying run
is either already on base or is one of the first two batsmen he faces); or

            (c) He pitches effectively for at least three innings.

No more than one save may be credited in each game.

I love the save rule, You can come in in the seventh with your team up 10, pitch three solid innings and get a save, thats why every year you usually find a couple of long relievers with a save or two. If you think thats cool, keep digging in that rule book you'll be blown away. Check out the way calculating earned runs works in some of the wackier situations. Baseball stat keeping is almost as wacky as learning to score bowling.
