Bonds? I wouldn't mind seeing it. But the detractors (thank God most times, GM's ignore them) will cry and whine and complain...as a host on The Fan here in NYC did today. They always talk about Bonds 'disrupting chemisrty', but none of these cats EVER admits to the fact that the Rays three vets: Percival, Floyd and Hinske have already helped things along.

Anyone who even THINKS Bonds would be a distraction (excluding the media following him and the team more intensley), is delirious....

PS if they don't go that route, I would LOVE to see Kenny Lofton (proven winner) take over left.....

I agree, they really should sign one of those two. They don't have to give anything up to get them except most likely the major league minimum salary.

While Crawford had an 11 game hitting streak going, he isn't one of the Rays two best hitters. He was having his worst offensive season since his first full year in the majors. His BA, OBP, SLG, SB's, and XBH's were all down from previous years. You can easily make a case for Upton, Navarro, Pena, and Hinske hitting better than him this year. I'm a big CC fan, but he's been sub-par this year. Where Crawford will be missed in the most is in the OF. He has occasional mental mistakes in the field, but his speed lets him track down just about any ball.

Bonds being brought in is a long shot. He's the best hitter out there, but he can't play the field that well anymore. And the most important thing is that the Rays do not want the distraction that Bonds would bring. They have a tight clubhouse and don't want to disrupt that.

The thing with Bonds is you don't know what type of shape he is in or how long it will take him to get his timing back.

This late in the year it might not even be worth it.

I'm not sure about the timing (though he was off until September in 2005 and he looked spot-on then), but he was just invited to a Giants outfielders reunion as part of their 50th year in San Francisco, and he looked to be in better shape than last year. I don't know how it looks he would fatigue, but baseball players don't lose it that quickly, especially after playing for what, 22 years? You either stay sharp or you get rusty, but you don't change. I'd assume he would be of the biggest at-the-plate threats in baseball once you give him a week in the box.

In his little speech on the mound at AT&T, he also claims that he hasn't retired. I'm sure a man like him has gone to the cage a few times this season, you know? I took a couple months off in my adult league and jumped right back in, and a fastball still looked like a fastball. The only problem I had was with the breaking stuff. Not curveballs, but splitters and changeups. It got so bad for my being rusty that I was playing a guessing game up there and was wrong almost every time. But a guy like him never plays the guessing game, and when he does he's always right. I'm guessing to him a fastball will still look like a fastball, and he'll still be able to use his legs to get around it.

The outfield aspect is still a question of concern, though. Now I think I'm the only person on this forum that thinks the guy still knows how to put a glove on, but I'm guessing the bigger question will be concerning, once again, his legs and his stamina.

It sounds like Bonds will play for the league minimum as well. It would be harsh and daunting, but if there isn't a no-release clause, if things went South, I'm sure they could just take him back off the roster by September when they expand their rosters for some outfield prospects in their AAA system if his presence really is that cancerous. I believe he'll be the cause of a heavy load of attraction/distraction toward him, but he won't be the creator of it. I'm sure he'll do what he can to make sure that he's not a headcase for these very reasons. I mean ever since 2004 he's been like that for San Francisco as well (aside from the off-season and steroid allegations). He's just been great toward the fans and community, and our play-by-play guys never hesitate to stop and say how much they miss him. He's made some improvements, much like Stan Ross in Mr. 3000 (R.I.P. Bernie), and his "headcase" moments are created by nobody else but the media.

Shame. The poor guy just wants to play. He's 65 hits away from 3,000 and 4 RBIs away from 2,000. I say a team should be generous enough to at least let him reach these milestones and then be in hiding for five years until his HOF induction. I'm sure his thought process is similar.

              A shame? Puh-leeze....

He made his own damn bed, save the sob story for someone that even remotely deserves it.

Let's see... many players are given other chances after what they've done, be it a headcase, steroids, etc. Their "rehab" periods have been very successful and they're all still allowed to play the game. No one is telling them they've "made their own bed" and they don't deserve sympathy. And I don't just mean in baseball.
