    Bryd traded to Red Sox

Posted by Nick Cafardo, Globe Staff August 12, 2008 03:41 PM

Here's a release on the trade from the Indians:

CLEVELAND, OH—The Cleveland Indians today announced the club has completed a trade with the Boston Red Sox, sending RHP PAUL BYRD to Boston in exchange for a player to be named or cash. The player to be named must be agreed upon on or before Jan '09.
HOORAY, The Indians somehow got something for Paul Byrd!

    EDIT: http://cleveland.indians.mlb.com/new...=.jsp&c_id=cle

CLEVELAND -- The Cleveland Indians today announced the club has completed a trade with the Boston Red Sox, sending RHP PAUL BYRD to Boston in exchange for a player to be named or cash. The player to be named must be agreed upon on or before January 15, 2009.

    Byrd made 22 starts with the Indians this year going 7-10 with a 4.53 ERA (131.0IP, 146H, 70R/66ER, 24BB, 56K, 23HR).

The Indians will not make a move today to replace Byrd on their active 25-man roster. The club's 40-man roster now stands at 39. The Indians are now undecided for the start on Thursday, August 14 vs. Baltimore.

Must be, Brydie is on a hot streak, but he'll drop more bombs than Russia on Georgia while pitching for the Red Sox.

I watched him pitch in Atlanta with the Braves a few years ago against the Cardinals and wondered as a coach how many high school pitchers I had seen in the past year that had better stuff than him. I don't think he broke 82 on the gun more than twice and he topped out at 84. There are sometimes when the stadium radar gun should be just cut off and that was one of those times.

I really don't understand how people are critical of this move.

We're more than likely giving up a player that would have never seen the light of day with this organization, or any team period. Or cash.

It's depth, if we catch lightening in a bottle and he provides a few quality starts, awesome. If he bombs out, we're back to where we were.

He is a poor man's Greg Maddux. He may not strike out a lot of guys and he sure as hell isn't going to blow anyone away with that 84 MPH heater, but the dude has outstanding control. The guy almost never walks anybody. I think it was last season where he went on a ridiculous streak where he didn't walk a single batter for nine starts or so.

I will agree that Byrd has pinpoint control similar Maddux, but his stuff just doesn't move as much as Maddux and I guess that has to do with why is not as successful either.

Re: Bryd traded to Red Sox

Byrd has done fairly well in the postseason. 3-1 (3-0 as a starter), 4.80 ERA in 7 games (5 starts). Like Thrasha said it's depth. Colon will be back soon which if he is fully healthy will be a big help. Who knows if and when Wakefield will be back and Buchholz has been a disaster. The Sox needed an arm and they got a decent one. Besides it's not like there are a whole lot of starters to choose from on the market right now.

I'd give Masterson another shot at the rotation.

Masterson is the most dependable non-Paps guy in the pen. No way does he go to the rotation. IMO, the Byrd pickup is a grade-A move if only because they give up literally nothing for him. Epstien said it won't be a prospect and it isn't a lot of cash. Best case, he gives us a number 2 or 3 starter material over the next 2 months. Worst-case, nothing different from now. Epstien has made a career of low-risk, high-rewards. He has done worse in the high-risk ones.

All of a sudden Matt Clement comes to mind.
