High Heat Converts?

I'm wondering what games the "hardcore" former High Heaters are playing. I'm not talking about the person who just played a little bit. I'm talking about the obsessed souls who played a couple seasons on multiple versions.

I was one of them -- and HH just seemed to redundant this year. I switched to ASB, it's got the most realistic feel, although pitcher control is a disappointment. I also tried MVP, but there's way too much contact.

Mods, feel free to move this to the HH forum if more appropriate, but this seemed like the best guess.

Last year was my last year buying High Heat. Same old crap every year. People talk about HH realism, ASB is the most realistic game in my opinion.

I am waiting on my HH to come in the mail. Last BB game I played was HH2001 and I played many enjoyable seasons with it.

I agree about HH. I bought the very first PC version upon release. The game was so good for a first effort and 3DO had those big ads that showed the staff they had working on HH. Seemed that the sky was the limit.

But they just haven't changed much in terms of gameplay. And they have an uncanny ability to introduce *big* bugs (anybody remember trying to catch a popup in Wrigley Field?) even though they don't change much.

I am done with HH too, just feels stale to me.

I loved HH for PC, had 2000, 2001 and 2002. Just got old after a while. Felt the same every year.

Hey Abrams my fellow lawyer and tuner. It's been a long time.

I'm not a convert b/c I still enjoy High Heat. It is still the most fundementally sound game on the market and the really the only option for a die hard sim fan. But I am also enjoying ASB2004 alot. There are many things to like about this game.

Off the top of my head the things I think are done well:

- size of field, players, ball
- animations - especially momentum
- variety in types games and situations - feels like baseball
- announcing
- stadiums - especially collision detection & working scoreboards
- franchise mode (best ever by far - including ootp)
- old ballparks / legend players
- stadium tours
- mutimedia interviews with historical players
- future throws
- batting stances
- hot/cold - pitch history
- errors / errant throws
- overall presentation
- mound visits
- bullpen
- foul balls
- user walks are dead on perfect
- challenge / difficulty
- faces
- ball physics
- passed balls / wild pitches
- fielders backing up on bad throws

The things that are bugging me:

Pitch Speeds - This hitting model definitely requires a good amount of practice and skill. Fine. But the fastball is unhittable on normal. And the breaking stuff is a little too slow and loopy in exagerrated. That is when a pitcher is fresh. As they tire all pitches slow down. My ideal setting would probably be normal when the pitchers are tired.

Pitching model - Even with all aids off you can throw a strike anytime you want. Whether you give up walks is up to you.

Hitting Modes - Aiming 3d cursor is ridiculous. Zone is not properly implemented. Classic is the best of the bunch. It is very wierd though. There is no ryhme or reason to it. Bottom of the cursor doesn't necesarily mean you hit a ground ball. But I have seen a decent variety of hits to all fields - maybe a little heavy on fly balls and hits to the center of the field.

Running game - They implement future throws but not future baserunning ala HH? This makes no sense to me. You cant really send a runner till he gets to the next base. Plus sometimes when sending a signal to one runner the other runner freezes. No matter how good you get at this game I am sure you will get frustrated once in awhile by the running controls. This is probably my biggest gripe.

CPU running AI - Slightly too conservative - not as good as HH. But better than others.

Lack of visible righty/lefty splits and ratings

The vaccum catches and crouched players at the end of the animations are minor graphical glitches that don't really bother me.

Since 2000 the only baseball game i considered buying was High Heat. This year, although, i'll be giving WSB a try. I havent been this excited about a baseball game since High Heat 2001.
