    Homeruns and Strikeouts

I've done some testin on homeruns and the lack of in my games.

What I discovered so far through replays is my timing is really off in my at bats. For example, I've had situations where a pitcher would leave a fat one over my hot zone (red circle) and I line out to straight center. This has happened regularly with a certain batter, Raul Mondesi. Lookin at my replays I seem to be gettin too antsy. I've noticed that im hitting the ball at the end of the bat. I had this happen with Soriano as well.

Most of us should know that a fastball at the end of the bat will more than often result in a high fly that just doesnt make it. We hear about it all the time during the games. I think this is accurately being represented in MVP. The only pitch I've hit off the end of my bat and knocked out is a slider. That slider was inside and well if you picture it in your head, makes a lot of sense that it would be gone.

I think the issue is our timing. I'm swingin really early at pitches. I make contact but through replay I can see that my bat head is way in front of the plate. Not a good thing. I really believe that as soon as we get the whole timing thing down then we'll see some more homeruns. Not triple play levels, but realistic levels. This game is about timing and it makes you really pay for poor timing.

Same goes for pitching. Poor pitch selection/speed/location will result in low strikeout numbers. Yea a lot of us want to blow 100mph fastballs by people with Randy Johnson but if you watch a baseball game Randy will never throw three straight fastballs into the strike zone.

Yes the CPU doesn't go diving for too many balls, but that doesnt mean you can't strike someone out. It's about confusing the batter's timing. Once you can do that, things will be fine.

Think timing. I'm sure that as we begin to master the game, we'll see a whole lot more of what this game has to offer. Right now all of us are going through a learning process, some of us which have already passed some of those stages.
"It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

"You'll not find more penny-wise/pound-foolish behavior than in Major League Baseball." - Rob Neyer

    Re: Homeruns and Strikeouts

Good post, I agree with you about the timing. Considering that everyone is just getting started with this game, it makes sense that home-run/strikeout totals are low. Imagine if they were high right at the beginning? The only thing I question is why the CPU HR totals are even lower. Using the same logic that its all about timing, the CPU should be hitting some out of the park, as we are all new to this pitching system. However, as it is, I've only given up 1 dinger in my eight games so far. Is this number only going to go down? But, this doesn't really bother me too much...it still makes for great baseball in the end.

I've hit three homers last night. It was satisfying. Two with Manny R one was a mistake pitch and the other and just hammered. The third was with Todd Walker of all people, an opposite field homerun that the pitcher threw a curve and I hit hard. It wasn't a mistake pitch either.

I with the CPU would get more homeruns.

And I wish the CPU had better pitcher releif AI.

            Re: Homeruns and Strikeouts

I hit two homeruns in a game yesterday, both off non-mistake pitches, so I think my timing is coming around. I'm also learning to look for pitches that I can take deep (along with pressing up-left/up-right on the analog to try to pull the ball and hit it high). I also hit a few shots off the wall in the deepest part of PacBell (421 ft.?) in a series against the Giants. In a couple of weeks I don't think me hitting homers will be too much of a problem (I hope it never gets too easy - when I jack one out now, I feel like I've earned it).

As for the CPU, I think I've given up 3 HR's in the 9 games of my franchise that I've actually played (as opposed to simmed). This number should be higher, especially with my pitching staff (Padres). I want to be nervous pitching to Barry Bonds, and right now I'm not.

                Re: Homeruns and Strikeouts

I had played 12 games on AllStar and had only hit 5 dingers.
My record was 7-5 (Jays), and the stats were pretty realistic except for that one number. I had also only given up 1 HR so far. So I thought that I would play my next game on Pro. I was worried that it would be some 12-11 game with 20 hits on each side. So I'm opening up a series in Yankee stadium against the Rocket. I got what I wanted when Delgado smacked a solo blast in the second. Follow that with a Wells shot in the 5th and I was pretty happy. The Yanks actually came back to take the lead. I had a man on third with 2 down in the ninth against Rivera. Phelps comes up with a clutch RBI single to send it into extra frames. In the 11th, Delgado smacks his second of the game, a 2-run shot, to put me up for good.

Overall, I didn't think there was a huge difference between AS and Pro. Actually, the hitting numbers were down a bit. In 11 innings, I had 5 runs on 11 hits. The Yanks had 3 runs on 10 hits.

Those 3 HRs I hit were great...I think the Pro level gives you a bit more pop. I will play on Pro for a while I think. If the numbers get out of control I will change back I guess. I was also thinking that maybe I would alternate games on AS and Pro. This way, I could get the best of both worlds.

I found a cheat code.....PS2, push circle then L2 button and tap x three times before the pitcher throws the ball. You'll hit a homerun every time. Amazing stuff!

Wonder if that works for the CPU, too? They need just as much help in that department as I do.
