Just returned MVP for WSB. Last day for EB trade-ins, too

Word. I really wanted to like MVP, and I'm very excited for next year's version, but too many gameplay issues for me this year. I haven't cracked open WSB yet, but just wanted to post that the guys at my EB (San Jose, CA) said today is the last day they're accepting returns for opened games.

I'm sure you could put up a fuss if your 14 days aren't up, and possibly all EBs aren't on the same schedule, but an FYI for anyone else who is in my situation.

I tried hard to like MVP over the weekend. I managed to notch 8Ks pitching (in one game!) with the NL All-Stars against the Tigers (on Rookie level, showing strike zone, no fade), using a fresh pitcher every two innings or so, and taking about 10 seconds to plan out each pitch, but that's just a bit too unrealistic for me. I also finally gave up my first (and only) CPU homer (on All-Star level) to Bonds at Fenway. And I gave up an inside-the-park home run because I accidentally switched players in the field (from LF to SS), and the LF stopped going after the ball completely.

Anyhoo, there are many things from MVP that need to be in all baseball games from now on: pitch meter concept, PIP running, "batching" your baserunning commands; the fielder throw meter concept, the batting method (timing where you "go" with the pitch, rather than swing for a location), and the gorgeous replays.

I'm sure I'll miss all of that, and I hope EA spends the next year figuring it all out. If not, I hope WSB2K4 can integrate it all and get rid of the cursor, or HH2K5 can do the same and "overhaul" its graphics again. And I hope MLB2005 doesn't exist.

    Y

[Oh, by the way, my single proudest MVP moment: striking out Sosa at home w/ Jason Schmidt in the sixth inning, for the game's only K. Go me!]

planning ten seconds for a pitch not realistic? i dont know about that, maybe a little time consuming....

Yeah, maybe you're right. It's not that horrible. But, honestly, with All-Star pitchers throwing high 90s heat and unhittable off-speed stuff, there is far too much CPU contact going on.

I'll eat some quick crow, too. Just tossed WSB into the XBox, and, while it's got a nice presentation, I couldn't get through the second inning of my first game. Too bored already.

It's silly when pitching to just pick a spot, hit "A," and see if my pitcher throws a strike. You mean I can't control how hard I throw? Same thing in the field. And this silly cursor? Sheesh.

Oh, well. Fingers crossed for MVP 2004.

I know what you mean. I have MVP and WSB and I really want to like WSB more because the graphics are so crisp and the franchise mode is deeper (year-to-year stat tracking, hall of fame, player fatigue, etc.), but MVP is just so much more fun, despite its faults. Pitching in WSB is pretty boring, and I'm really starting to hate cursor batting (it just doesn't feel natural).

I really like MVP this year, but I'm already excited about MVP2004.

Here's what I did with WSB to eliminate moving the cursor around so much.

                        *I set the game on:
                        Legend - Difficulty
                        Custom - AI.

I started with the Legend AI and changed two things... Pitching AI set to 100 and the pitches thrown for strikes set to 5. I also set, Very Fast pitching and Pitching Variable - Medium.

*I use the Pro Power hitting option and before the pitcher pitches I just barely move my cursor within the strike zone to either the top/right, top left, bottom/right ect... Believe it or not, even if the cursor is placed high and away and the pitch comes in low and outside you will still be able to make contact but you will hit it softly on the ground.

*This forces me to wait for my pitch all while lowering my hits per game.

The drawback of doing this is that you're not able to check your swing.

I haven't tried the Pro Power hitting. I've been playing WSB with pitches set to very fast with cursor-on (cursor-off doesn't feel right because the analog stick doesn't do anything), in order to get more of a feel of reacting to a pitch rather than trying to aim the cursor (I feel like I'm playing missle command or something). I like hitting to be more about quick reactions, then precise aiming.

I'll try what you suggested and see if I like it. I really want to get into WSB, but the pitcher-batter interface has been a total let down for me so far (on both sides) compared to MVP.
