I would pick him up because :

    A) He was an Aztec...yeah SDSU!
    B) He was a Patrick Henry H.S. alum...yeah..Eric Karros, Matt Nokes...now Harang.
    C) He is 6'7

I coached his younger brother in H.S.(he is now at S.D.S.U.) and have known his family(great BTW) for many years.

I am biased as you can see.

    teaching.............still fun

video games........I wish my boys would let me play

watching Tottenham vs. Liverpool at White Hart Lane............2004 was a long time ago

Harang is probably going to be one of the better number 5 pitchers you could pick up.

He gets hit hard at times, but because Oakland should win a lot of games, he should do pretty good. He is probably good for somewhere between 8 and 11 wins.

Just keep in mind that the A's have shown a tendency to tinker with the bottom part of their starting rotation a lot. Harang is the favorite to open as the 5th starter, but you can see what they have done recently : last year, Harang replaced the struggling Erik Hiljus mid season, the year before Hiljus stepped in for Gil Heredia, etc.

This year, they have John Halama and Hiljus that can step in at any moment if Harang struggles. Also, don't rule out them bringing super prospect Rich Harden up for a look here.

Harang's hold on the job will be tenuous, but you could do a lot worse. As long as he doesn't go on a long losing streak he should be ok.

Another guy you might want to take a look at is Darren Dreifort of the Dodgers. He is supposedly healthy again, and you will probably be able to get him real cheap as other fantasy owners either forgot about him or are scared off by his injury history.

Carlos Zambrano of the Cubs may be worth a look, too. He has looked really good in camp so far.

Re: Any thoughts on Harang as a fantasy baseball pitcher?

Dude, your team looks really nice. You have a lot of balance. You have good power hitters (Helton, Vlad, Konerko), some guys that will hit for a high average, and a nice pitching staff. You are going to get a lot of saves with Rivera and Wagner.

I like your picks of Jose Hernandez and Preston Wilson too. Wilson could have a monster year with good power numbers hitting between Helton and Walker. He should see some good pitches to hit. Hernandez should be good for 30 + bombs in Colorado too. The only thing with those 2 guys is that you will have a lot of strikeouts, but that doesn't matter in fantasy.

The only thing I could recommend to you is that you may want to pick up another guy for your bench that will get you steals. Pierre should swipe you plenty of bags, but I don't see anyone else on your team that is a big threat, although Vidro will get you some.

Nice team, though. You have a lot of bangers in that lineup, and if Juan Gone, Frank Thomas and IROD come back strong this year, you will be deadly. Watch out for Tony Armas Jr. He is due for a breakout year, and this may be the time he finally puts it all together. He was lights out at the end of last season.

Zambrano and Harang are my long shots along with German for Detroit (stepping in for Anderson)

You may want to re-think the Aaron Harang pickup. He got demoted yesterday, and it looks like John Halama has a lock on the 5th spot in the rotation....for now.
