EA is always blasted for being an 'arcade' game company instead of a sim company. There are times when I agree, however MVP is not one of them. I'm hoping this may signal a slight change for them. MVP has a subtle depth to it that I am just learning.
This game is easy to learn but very hard to master. I can play the same two teams, with the same two pitchers and have VERY different results. That is the way it should be. I have learned how to stike out batters by playing the CPU as it was a human opponent. You really need to "fool" them, attack them, keep them off balance. If you do that you will increase your strikeouts immensely.
I have heard some of the same people who have problems getting strikeouts, also say that they give up too many weak singles. Well let's think about that. If you are nibbling corners and staying in cold zones while keeping the ball low, the CPU is gonna take what you give it and try to beat you slowly and painfully. This is also why you don't see the CPU homers. When I go at the hitter, I get more strikeouts and also give up more long balls. Some teams you can attack, others it's more prudent to not be so aggressive...just like real life. One last thing. If you wanna strike out the CPU, throw him things that you'd like to see as a hitter. What do you fall for as a hitter. You do this and not only will the CPU strike out, but they WILL chase pitches. I've stuck out some all-star players on three straight piches.
On the subject of hitting HR'S, I was having the same problem as everyone else was. Then I turned the damn strikezone off. If you want to hit home runs, this is a MUST. Why? Because instead of guessing if it's a strike or not, you will focus on the pitcher first, and the release of the ball second. When you focus on the ball, you HIT the ball. Since doing this, I have cut down my K's and I have hit up to 5 HR's in one game with players that aren't that great in the power department. BUT, I also can go 3 games in a row without hitting one. Just like real life. So work the count to your favor...anticipate that belt hight 2-0 fastball and aim for the bleachers (with the stick of course) and you will hit your fair share.
The last thing I'm learning is the stolen base thing. Man have I been brutal at it, but I'm just starting to get a few. This is one area that the CPU is way too awful in cuz I love when they steal...it's a free out for me.
Anyway, I play this game like I play NCAA2003 football, and how I used to play the NHL series in the late 90's....any chance I get! I can't believe I'm this hooked on a baseball title. They have some work to do, but I have never enjoyed playing this much video game baseball like a crack monkey in my life. .....now if they could only fix madden!
