Scratch the Surface!!!....one week with MVP.

Ok this game has been out a week, and now I think it's possible to share some more educated observations about this game. Like real baseball, you don't get excited after your team goes 8-2 it's first ten games cuz it's a LONG season, we judge in August at the earliest. Anyway here is some quich things I have noticed.

EA is always blasted for being an 'arcade' game company instead of a sim company. There are times when I agree, however MVP is not one of them. I'm hoping this may signal a slight change for them. MVP has a subtle depth to it that I am just learning.

This game is easy to learn but very hard to master. I can play the same two teams, with the same two pitchers and have VERY different results. That is the way it should be. I have learned how to stike out batters by playing the CPU as it was a human opponent. You really need to "fool" them, attack them, keep them off balance. If you do that you will increase your strikeouts immensely.

I have heard some of the same people who have problems getting strikeouts, also say that they give up too many weak singles. Well let's think about that. If you are nibbling corners and staying in cold zones while keeping the ball low, the CPU is gonna take what you give it and try to beat you slowly and painfully. This is also why you don't see the CPU homers. When I go at the hitter, I get more strikeouts and also give up more long balls. Some teams you can attack, others it's more prudent to not be so aggressive...just like real life. One last thing. If you wanna strike out the CPU, throw him things that you'd like to see as a hitter. What do you fall for as a hitter. You do this and not only will the CPU strike out, but they WILL chase pitches. I've stuck out some all-star players on three straight piches.

On the subject of hitting HR'S, I was having the same problem as everyone else was. Then I turned the damn strikezone off. If you want to hit home runs, this is a MUST. Why? Because instead of guessing if it's a strike or not, you will focus on the pitcher first, and the release of the ball second. When you focus on the ball, you HIT the ball. Since doing this, I have cut down my K's and I have hit up to 5 HR's in one game with players that aren't that great in the power department. BUT, I also can go 3 games in a row without hitting one. Just like real life. So work the count to your favor...anticipate that belt hight 2-0 fastball and aim for the bleachers (with the stick of course) and you will hit your fair share.

The last thing I'm learning is the stolen base thing. Man have I been brutal at it, but I'm just starting to get a few. This is one area that the CPU is way too awful in cuz I love when they steal...it's a free out for me.

Anyway, I play this game like I play NCAA2003 football, and how I used to play the NHL series in the late 90's....any chance I get! I can't believe I'm this hooked on a baseball title. They have some work to do, but I have never enjoyed playing this much video game baseball like a crack monkey in my life. .....now if they could only fix madden!

                        YES, great post!!

I've never been able to really get into a Baseball game up until this. I have "MVP Thumb"(it's raw as all hell) from playin this game like 6 hours straight.

                        THANK YOU EA!!!
$*ck IGN for sayin this game ain't better than WSB. This game is the best baseball game i've ever played. I simply can't say enough about this game. It has me hooked worse than any game in recent history aside from Madden of course...well scratch that, I DO like it as much as Madden. The gameplay is just so, so, so ENGROSSING. You actually feel like a pitcher and batter in the situations. And I love the gratification that comes after sitting down a hitter with a KO.

things EA needs to improve on are:
Fielding - The assisted option is an absolute godsend on this game because i would be lost without it, so they need to make it so you can manually dive and jump. Also a speed burst would also be welcome. Also make the catchers and base players(1b, 2b etc..) more ready to be able to make a quick tag.

Franchise - Include a Fantasy dreaft, that's my only gripe. Sure other games may immerse you more as a virtual GM but personally i don't really need all of that ish. Just give me a Fantasy Draft and we are good.

GamePlay options - A Mini Camp feature like Madden's with the lil drills and would be TIGHT. They could include a hitting and pitching mini game which would give you points to unlock old school players.

those are my only suggestions for next year's version.

Overall this game is an absolute GEM.

9.25/10 - which is INCREDIBLE for a 1st year franchise

Thanks! I am playing on All-Pro, and am thinking about All-Star level soon. As soon as I figure out how to steal a freakin' base that is!

Just to clarify about Madden, the only problem I have with it is that it is stale. It does everything real well, just has lost the fun factor for me. Even though NCAA2003 has the same engine, it's just more fun for me. But, it seems that EA has had a slight shift in their gameplay with Live and MVP. I mean both these franchises were slowly dieing and losing to Sega in some opinion. I have a feeling that next years football and hockey titles by EA will be MUCH different. MVP has me much more optimistic. Cuz like I said, can you really remember being this immersed in a baseball game? Great job, and now that they have impressed me, my expectations for next year will be VERY high. Do you think OS can post a sticky for us to do a Q&A with a developer for next years version?
