Instant Replay starting Thursday
Major League Baseball reversed its long-standing opposition to instant replay and will allow umpires to check video on home run calls in series that start Thursday.

Re: Instant Replay starting Thursday
This is the only way they should ever use instant replay.
Some home runs, especially those near foul poles are too difficult to judge from a distance. Human eyes need the help.
Safe/Out, Ball/Strike: That must stay the same and should never include the aid of technology. Technology should only come in play when reviewing the calls after a game, so that umpires can become better."It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

Re: Instant Replay starting Thursday
I get it.
But, I think once you open that door then you have to have video for calls at 1B. Then that means you have to have it for steals at 2B. All of a sudden, now the players will negotiate video for check swings and borderline called third strikes.
There is a legit reason for the homerun video. They are not always in the best position to see the entire play. But, at homeplate, the umpire should always be right there on top of the plate. At that point, it has to be his call."It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. First replay just used in the Yankees/Rays game. Came to a conclusion pretty quick. Couldn't really tell if they got it right though, because ESPN had a horrible angle at the home run.Member of The OS Baseball Rocket Scientists AssociationComment

Re: Instant Replay starting Thursday
Can we get a camera on top of the pole like the camera on the NFL goal post? If the ball goes higher than the pole, then it's just so difficult to tell. We need more interesting cameras.Comment
