    New guy needs advice...

    Hi everyone,

I'm new to these forums (not new to viewing threads...that "not being able to view threads without logging in" doesn't work, by the way ), and I thought I would start posting with this quandary.

I've become a text-simmer. That is, I used to be a High Heat player, until the first HH2002 patch came out. When that took away the visit mound feature, and 3Doh told us to go screw ourselves as a result, I started to lose faith in the baseball world of gaming.

When HH2003 came out...you may know it as HH2002...I said screw HH, and I went to Out of the Park. I run my baseball league on it, and if you wish, you can check it out in my signature.

Now, OOTP5 is out, and I've been spoiled on the depth that text games give me, in terms of statistical abilities, as well as the ability to play out long-term (if you check out my league, you'll see that the league originated in 1901, and we're into the 2004 preseason). I have not found this to be the case in any baseball console game...

    ...until this year.

Each baseball game out there makes a strong case as a "buy me" game. Unfortunately, each title seems to be lacking something....whether it be big or small, something puts up a red flag for each game.

My question to you, the ASB forum, is this:

What game should I get? I've picked up ASB so many times before...but I hate Acclaim (it's two K's now?) so very much, as they generally put out some of the most unrealistic titles out there. However, with a Best Buy gift card, and Best Buy's inability to bring WSB into their store, I might get it.

I haven't written off HH, but have written off MVP with a bug I saw earlier (guy running around in circles on the bases...didn't like it to much).

Anyway, that's my situation as of now. Thank you for reading this ridiculously long-winded post, one in which I'm sure I lost you early on. Hopefully you can convince me that this game is worth getting over WSB with my gift card, or even the Family Guy DVD, which comes out in less than a month.

    Peace
    John

ASB is incredibly deep in frachise mode. IT even offers a manage only mode, I am not sure any other game offers that except maybe HH. I am a huge fan of OOTP5, I play it all the time. And I can honestly say that the franchise depth in ASB is probably the closest you will find to OOTP in a console game. If you have specific questions about what ASB has to offer in this respect, then let us know.

Just promise us this, give ASB some time. It is frustrating as hell when you first start playing it, but give it time and you will really see the gameplay start to shine. I do not regret my purchase of ASB at all. And I hated the last few years versions of the game.

        John--
To expand upon what Ed said--I, too, think that you'll be truly amazed and surprised with this year's version of ASB. I'm an "old-school" table top baseball sim geek (back in the day before the console games) I gew up on Strat-O-Matic and Avalon Hill Statis Pro Baseball games as well as other sports offerings.

When I made the transition to console games a few years back, I felt a little bit behind the rest of the world. I struggled with the idea of my hand-eye coordination having an impact on the true realsim and sim value that I wanted to see from by baseball seasons. Nonetheless, I pushed ahead and became a better console player (albeit only a little better) and grew to appreciate the wonderful animations and the gorgeous stadiums that accompanied these games.

Now, that ASB2004 has come into my gaming library, I finally feel the transition is complete. From the time I was a small boy (I'm 35 now) to now I have found what I've been looking for. A wonderful Manager-Only, Ultra-Franshise oriented baseball game that LOOKS absolutely incredible at the same time.

This is not to say that I will never take advantage of ASB's gameplay. I still like to "swing the bat" every now and then and that's what Quick Play/Scenario Made/ and HR Derby can and will do for me.

I liked ASB2002 a little bit, I like ASB 2003 just a bit better but I can honestly say that I am as excited about this baseball game as any I have ever played on any type of platform--be it table top or computerized.

        I hope this helps.
