If MVP doesn't run smoothly on my PC .. how would I fix it?

I had NBA Live on my computer and at first it ran flawlessly. Then magicly soon later, the gameplay was pretty choppy and laggy, even when I put the detail settings way down. It makes no sense, because right after I installed and played it, it worked fine. Then soon later it was damn near unplayable.

I am just getting worried early I guess - but if this happens with MVP (lagging pitch meter and bat timing) how would I fix it? My computer is less than a year old and has lots of ram and all that other good stuff -- it happens to be a laptop -- but can you guys give me any advice? Would I defrag?
    Thanks

Delete all unused programs before you Defrag.

Also before you play any game make sure there aren't any programs running in the background.

If you still get jerky play after that, adjust your virtual memory in windows.

laptops don't generally come with great videocards for gaming, do you know what you have in your system?

Mess around with the detail settings in the game, like shadows and stuff.

Hey Brian thanks for the reply - Here is my cpu info...as far as I know :
                Windows XP Home Edition
                Pentium 4 - 1.60 GHz
                512 MB of RAM
"Virtual Memory - Paging file size for all drives - 768 MB"
                Videocard: Mobility Radeon 7500?
                - Hardware Acceleration - FULL
                - then I've got a bunch of ATi settings like OpenGL and Direct3D

                Am I missing anything?

maybe buy some extra memory for it, that helped me with command and conqueor look and see what the min requirements are for the game
