OK. I finally got fed up with the lack of timing required to pull a pitch (or hit one the other way). So I decided to hold the swing button down before the pitcher threw the ball. (You must do it after he starts his windup though). What happened? I hit about 5 homeruns in a row. Some were to right field and some were to left. Then, I hit some line drives. I tried this with a 4-seam fastball, cutter, and meatball. Balls came flying of the bat. It did not work for change-ups. I'm not sure what to conclude from this.

            <hr /></blockquote><font class="post">

What a coincidence! I just noticed this today also and if you posted this within about 1/2 an hour of discovering it then we found this strange situation at about the same time.

I was taking some daily BP before leaving for work and was practicing on the 4 seam. I was late on 3 or 4 in a row so on the next pitch I held down the swing during the wind-up and discovered that if you've got the cursor in the right place this is an automatic hit (timing doesn't matter at all, the cpu will swing right away and always makes good contact) The only drawback is that you can't check swing and it only works with high velocity pitches. If its off-speed you will swing WAAAAY early.

What I can't figure out is if I like this or hate it

The side of me that is deeply in love with ASB says it ties into the theory that on a big-league fastball the batter must start swinging within a fraction of a second from when the pitcher releases the ball so if you are sitting on a fastball and can guess the location it helps you get around on even the nastiest fastballs so I can accept it. Major league batting IS a game of educated guesses.

My other side says this is just another ugly mark against ASB's gameplay. Because I love this game I can deal, but I wonder if they did this on purpose?

Re: What\'s wrong with this picture?

The fact that some of these balls go to right field, and some go to left is what bugs me. Obviously if you are holding down the button before the pitch, and the cpu won't let you swing until the ball is released, then the timing should be the same, right? The fact that the ball goes everywhere seems like a problem.

Also, pitchers don't throw fast enough to warrant starting your swing as soon as the ball is released. Guys in the majors have a quick enough bat to allow them to at least see the ball after it leaves the pitcher's hand. So the problem here is either the ball moves to fast relative to the swing speeds or the bats move to slow relative to the ball speed. In either case, something was not implemented accurately in this game.

If you try this at length you'll find that the batter doesn't swing exactly upon release but a little after, which goes along with your observation.

The window of opportunity to start your swing on the hard fastball is very small and with this auto-swing "cheat" they allow you a way to swing as early as would realistically be possible to make contact with a ball reaching the plate that quickly(keep in mind that this auto-swing isn't neccessary as you can still make contact with the hard stuff by manually swinging, you just have a split second to do it). The tradeoff of course is the fact that you have to guess the correct location and it has to indeed be a fastball, or you miss miserably.

I am comfortable with this as again in reality, the amount of time it takes to process whether it is a ball or strike and whether or not you want to swing the bat is a matter of milliseconds. Against a quality pitcher with good velocity a real batter looks for a certain pitch in a certain spot, given the pitchers tendacies and pitch history.

ASB has always represented the futility of trying to hit the fastball wherever its pitched and demands that the player use some smarts at the plate.

All that being said, I agree with you that the lack of timing affecting the hit placement has always been ASB's biggest weakness.

The question to ask yourself is whether you put a premium on the timing of hitting (where HH reigns supreme) or the anxiety generated by seemingly unhittable fastballs.

HMcCoy- Yes, I do put a premium on the timing. I think if you swing late the ball should go to the opposite field- just like it real baseball. It's just physics. And, I don't think it should be a complete guessing game. I mean, it's ok to look change up and only swing if that's what you get. But to look fastball and still have to guess location... You may see guys get fooled by curves, etc., but I've never seen anybody swing high and inside on a fastball when it was down and away. Have you?

Have you tried HH? Do you recommend it? I may have to give it a shot.

for the love of God, you will switch to a different game because of this? Guess you 2 are the only ones who noticed this.

just because you swing late doesn't mean the ball should automatically go to right field. sometimes you pop it up or fould it off or miss all together. Either way, I think you forget it is a game.

I was joking before, but now I am not. Please take the game back.

Instead of spending another $50, why not play the game as it was intended to be played instead of going out of your way to find ways to not like it? Most "flaws" people seem to be finding are because people are deliberately playing the game wrong. I'm no programmer, but I'm sure it's hard to plan for every contingency where some person is going to go out of their way to play the game in a way other than intended.
