You're thinking of designated hitting (DH). That's AL only. -

So only the American League can have designated hitters? Why not the NL? Why is that the rule?
also, if you can DL in place of a pitcher why not do that in every game since the pitcher is usually poor hitters. Or do they do that in the MLB already.
ThanksComment

The settings for DH are AL home only, always on, and always off. The default setting is AL home only because in real baseball only AL teams (& interleague games at AL parks) use the DH rule.Comment

Remember this rule also factors in to which ballpark the game is played in. The AL team cannot use a DH during an NL team vs. AL team matchup in an NL ballpark.

Managers for NL teams (and managers for AL teams playing in NL ballparks) do that already in situations when they perceive to be the pitcher's last at-bat of the game. Managers also feel the need at times to bring in a pinch hitter during a pitcher's perceived second-from-last at-bat if they plan on bringing in a new pitcher on the mound for the next inning.

Re: Why does it say in the game options pinch hitting is only in the AL?
so basically, NL teams can't do DH...they can have pinch hitters for the pitchers, but's that different from DH because DH is in place of the pitchers and the pitcher is still in the game whereas a pinch hitter would replace the pitcher and that pitcher would be out of the game.
Still why is this rule only apply to AL home teams? Doesn't sound fair and even if the Phillies were playing the Yanks at NY and only the Yanks can have DHComment

Heh, that's just how the chips fell. The AL began using the DH decades ago (since the early '70s, I believe), but the NL didn't follow through back then toward adding it to their league. And this doesn't appear to be happening anytime soon for the NL either.
However, NL teams can indeed use a DH for interleague games played in AL ballparks.
