Beane still got great value for Blanton.

I wouldn't say he flourished. He was basically the same pitcher after the trade as he was before, with the exception of some significant luck on balls in play (.271 BABIP). He did have a couple real nice postseason starts though.

I don't think Beane would give up Gonzales if he wasn't planning on keeping Holliday.

Yeah, I wouldn't say flourished, either. During the season, he was cool. Blanton was okay. He didn't screw up like alot of people thought he would. Which was good.

His postseason, though, is a totally different story. He kicked *** and helped us to a WS title.

So, what we gave up for Blanton was totally worth it.

Not necessarily. The A's have plenty of depth in CF with Ryan Sweeney, Rajai Davis, Chris Denorfia, Eric Patterson and Javier Herrera. I'm guessing the A's were not overly impressed with the offensive numbers put up by Gonzalez (.242, 4, 26). Gonzalez has a tremendous upside but Holliday fills a need the A's have in the here and now. Besides a starter who went 7-16 with an ERA over 4.00 and a closer who has blown 12 of his last 46 save oppertunities was not going to be enough to get this deal done.

For the A's, like everyone said, they usually trade guys like this instead of trade for him (Haren, Blanton, Swisher, etc.).

Maybe they pull a Marlins/Piazza and ship him somewhere else.
I don't get this for the Rockies, but for the A's I think adding a bat like Holliday's was a must.

Look at their lineup...it sucks...their best hitter for avg in 08 was Kurt Suzuki, and Jack Cust was the only power bat they had. They had 3 guys hit double digit homers:

              Cust 38
              Brown 13
              Ellis 12

That's pitiful. This is a team in desperate need of any kind of hitter, and Holliday is one of the best.

What did they give up to get him??? Huston Street...Blah...He's a closer w/ arm trouble, and the A's have at least two guys who can replace him.

Maybe Carlos Gonzales pans out, but by the time that actually happens Holliday will have had a couple more career years.

Gregg Smith didn't seem like anything great either.

IMO the A's stole...no...raped Colorado to get Holliday.

Hadn't there been much better offers from other teams??? This deal surprised the hell out of me because I thought other teams had made much better offers for Holliday for well established/healthy players.

I saw Carlos Gonzalez play a couple times when he was a Yakima Bear and the kid can flat out play. He'll be a good player for the Rockies in a couple years. I actually think the Rockies didn't make it out to bad because Holliday wasn't going to re-sign after next season anyway. This way, they get 2 good prospects and can flip Street for a couple more.

Still, the A's will be scarier obviously with Holliday in the middle but their pitching will definitely hurt them next year.

According to reports with all of the trades Billy Beane has made in the last year the A's have $30 million to play with this offseason. Even after Holliday's $9 million they still have $21 million to go add a starting pitcher or two.

But even with all that money to play with Holliday still makes no sense for the A's because the Angels will have at least 23 million to spend with the loss of Krod and letting go of Garret Anderson..they are also looking to trade Gary Matthews which would free up another 10 mill. If they get Texeria or Manny, and re-sign Lackey and Guerrero the Angels are still on top and the A's are right back where the were but with more payroll....which they don't want. I just don't see how this trade works into Beane's usual plan.

The only way the Angels are gong to be able to trade Gary Matthews Jr. is if they eat a large chunk of the $30 million he is owed over the next 3 seasons and i'm not sure they are willing to do that.

Holliday may not turn the A's around single handedly but he does make their lineup better. Holliday, with Jack Cust and a healthy Eric Chavez give the A's a pretty strong middle of the order. Plus, if Daric Barton emerges as the power threat they think he will be and Bobby Crosby and Mark Ellis rebound from injuries the A's will have a pretty solid lineup. Which will allow them to spend money on the pitching help they need.

Beane is not worried about the payroll-he can shed the payroll in july if the A's are out of contention.

Rockies organization has been feeding everyone the line of being patient to let their farm players mature and become great players, we've waited and they just shipped off one (Atkins may be the next to go)- money is not a problem either for the Colorado Rockies, I believe we're in the top 5 for profits?

Monfort is not concerned about it imo, this trade sure makes it look like his sole interest is $$$ and not rings.

It's amazing how the Rockies went from overpaying players (Todd Helton, Mike Hampton, Denny Neagle) to bargain basement in the span of a few years. Maybe it's time to do away with the humidor and let the Homers start flying again so the fans at Coors at least have something to cheer about.

And about Garrett Atkins being the next to go, rumors have the Reds trying to work out a deal for Atkins, Willy Tavares and Yorvit Torrealba-this according to Ken Rosenthal.

Thats the one thing being tossed around here, the organization is afraid to do anything in order to keep big players around or sign a high profile FA. Alot of teams make the same mistake but atleast they're willing to try again, not the Rockies

For Atkins, it'll be hard to keep him with Stewart playing the way he has and Helton coming off of back surgery. There's not enough room right now. If we do trade him, it would be great if we got a pitcher that can go in the front of the rotation.

Torrealba was doomed once Ianetta got hot but the one interesting thing is Ianetta showing up in rumors with a trade to the Red Sox

As are Gerald Laird and Jarrod Saltalamacchia. I think the Red Sox are trying to show Jason Varitek and Scott Boras that they are prepaired to move on without him and drop the Jorge Posada sized contract demands.
