Re: Manage Only and Homerun Totals

Well, I decided to start off from scratch (on Manage Only, of course) and begin my Reds franchise with the most updated rosters I could put together and lo and behold....through 5 games, I have yet to hit a homer.
I'm wondering how long this streak will continue. Before, I I would at least hit one every four games or so at the very least.

If some of you are deeper into your Manage Only franchises, I'd like to know your HR totals.

    <hr /></blockquote><font class="post">

Hmm, I wonder who holds the record for continuous games played on manage only without simming... in the games defense (I know I was bitching hard-core about the lack of offense) I've hit a nice string of games now with good parts offense without losing the good pitching. I even hit a nice 3 run jack with Darin Erstad yesterday that made me very happy. I put the game on exagerrated count and the batting on classic-- it might help, might not. It seems to have, but maybe the game was ready to start hitting regardless.

All I can say is hang in there. Work the count. Find the grooves... and sim... you gotta sim, or control your guys.

      More Manage Only Talk

Well, it's been a whikle since us "Manage-Only people" had a chance to discuss....

I have evaluated and re-evaluated this method of play for many games now and have come to the conclusion that I will definitely continue to use it. As I said before, it reminds me too much of my childhood days and playing table-top baseball games. (Only now--I don't have to compile all the stats by hand!)

But, I have completely given up on Generated Pitch Count. Immediately upon abandoning it, my homerun totals increased to the point of realism. I believe that the more opportunities you have facing pitches at the plate, the more opportunities you have to hit one out of the park.
I also noticed that with GPC on, after 10 games, I held 4 of the top 5 psots in the ML in strikeouts. That's wasn't good!

I started my Reds Franchise over and over again until I adjusted the settings to a point where I liked. Ironically, where I am at right now (with MO on, GPC off, rosters completely updated) is the worse start (4-10) of all my previous Franchise beginnings.

My next Q to all of you who are playing MO w/o GPC is what does your team batting average look like? I'm at a paultry .214....heading very fast for the Interstate. I'm producing a fair (but not great) amount of homers still (maybe 3 every 5 games or so). I still strikeout a lot....even though I do take pitches when the count/situation/hitter up is favorable.

I'd really be interested in seeing some stats from MO users.
      Congratulations BUTLER BULL DOGS!

          Re: More Manage Only Talk

I love this thread!!! I originally decided not to buy any of the games this year because I was under the impression none of them have the MO option. Now, I'm seriously considering ASB. Please keep up the chat, I may be joining u as a fellow manager some day soon.

BTW, someone mentioned that if you adjust HH enough you can play it as a MO. Is this true? If so, should I go in that direction if I'm a stickler for realistic stats? thanks

              Stats From MO Mode

I though t I'd take a second to update some Manage-Only Users on some of my findings.

I have played through the first 5 series (a total of 16 games) using the Cincinnati Reds.

Here are my results (Keep in mind...This is on Manage-Only Mode...and the Generated Pitch Count Turned Off)

Record 3-13 (Currently on a 9 game losing streak)

              Starters Batting Averages
              Larkin .126
              Boone .147
              Griffey .221
              Kearns .217
              Dunn .334
              Casey .209
              Branyon/Larson .223 / .207
              TEAM AVERAGE .200
(All other players are under .220 and all but two are under .200)

              HOMERUN LEADERS
              Dunn 2
              Griffey 1
              Boone 1
              Branyon 1

As I said in a previous post I hold 3 of the top four slots in K's
              1. Larkin 23
              2. Boone 22
              4. Griffey 20

My pitching stats seem somewhat realistic in terms of ERA, K and BB.

I'm not sure what to think of this.
Could it just be an early season slump? I haven't faced excessively strong teams with great pitching (Pirates, Cubs twice, Astros, Phillies). Or will it progressively worsen to the point where my team average drops below .180?

What sort of remedies could I use?

              1. Alter Contact and Power Ratings a notch or two?

              2. Although I try to "Take Pitches" when I feel its best, do I need to improve here? (It's very frustrating to select Contact, only to see the batter swing at a pitch way out of the zone....but I understand that that's part of the game).

I want to stay in Manage-Only mode if at all possible, but I feel that as poor as my digital dexterity is....I can do better on Veteran.

Also, I have turned "GM All" on, thus allowing me to conduct all trades to mirror the real MLB season at the expense of turning Injuries off. I hope next year's version will have these features independent of each other. I still like to sikulate my season based on the real thing's roster movements, but I also like injuries to occur in my season. There must not be too many people who think this way.

We should start an all-new manage only thread.

HiJumper, I don't know how you could play every game on manage-only. I'm in season 3 of managing a game a series and siming the rest and I've still yet to see an HR by Miguel Tejada, who I picked up in the first off-season. I need the simmed games to level out the stats... but the best of luck to you...

... I do think, in general, for everyone, that you need to study the pitcher... as far as his strikes to balls ratio, and how often he comes back with a strike after a ball, and so on... I used to only take pitches when I had no strikes yet, but recently I've been taking the pitches following strikes if a guy swings at a first pitch that's a ball... it seems to me the pitchers, sensing a weekness of patience in your guy will immediately toss another ball to get you to chase.. and it works, most of the time. I feel that different strategies work at different times, you just really have to study each case... and go with what works when you discover it.

I also play with exaggerated pitches and the batting set to classic... I have no scientific data to support that this does anything, but it works for me... still truding through the sahara with bits of oasis here and there...

Hopefully some all-star baseball folks are reading this and will grant us the ability to up the offense (or down it if you're really sadistic) on next years game... plz plz plz

Hey guys just checked out this thread and love it. I love the manage only option on ASB2004. I used to only play my baseball games with the manage only option (High Heat - Pre 2004). Now that High Heat has taken that option away without severe modding (turning everything to cpu on) , ASB is the way to go for us "Manage Only" types. I have found the same gripes as this thread illustrates: 1. Do I use the generated pitch count or not, does it make a difference? 2. The difference between power and contact? 3. LOW SCORING GAMES - The biggest problem IMO. I'm a purist like everyone else, but I've evolved to understand that "TODAYS GAME" is about offense for the most part. I feel that the average game should be 6-4, not 2-1 (or even worse). There's no way that Joey Hamilton vs. Estabon Loiza should yeild a 2-1 score, and I like good pitching as much as the next guy.
